The differential cross section and analysing power of the p + p → d + π+ reaction were measured at a number of proton energies between 305 and 425 MeV using a polarised proton beam extracted from the TRIUMF cyclotron, and a 50 cm Browne-Buechner magnetic spectograph for detecting the pions. The results clearly display the existence of d-wave pion production for pion momenta (cms) as low as 0.5mπc.

Abstract Angular distributions of differential cross sections and polarization analyzing powers are presented for the 1 H ( p , π + ) 2 H reaction for incident proton energies between 305 and 425 MeV. The pions were detected in a single-arm configuration employing a magnetic spectrograph. Pions associated with both bound (deuteron) and unbound final nucleon states were detected simultaneously. These data provide the first indication of the contribution of d-wave pions in this energy region. Some data concerning the analyzing power for the inclusive pions from the 1 H ( p , π + ) pn reaction are also presented. An interesting feature of these results is the similarity of the analyzing power for the 1 H ( p , π + ) pn reaction (when the relative kinetic energy in the pn system is 10–20 MeV) to that for 1 H ( p , π + ) 2 H .

We have measured the differential cross section for π− elastically scattered from 12C at Tπ=29 MeV. The scattered π− were detected with pion range telescopes. The measured angular distribution is compared with a momentum space optical potential calculation. Derived phase shifts are compared with those obtained from π+ data and from momentum and coordinate space calculations.

π− elastic scattering experiments on 12,13C at 29. and 49.5 MeV and on 16,18O at 29. MeV are presented. The ratio of as well as the ratio of 18O differential cross section to 16O differential cross section have been measured. Two optical potentials have been used to examine the sensitivity of the ratios to neutron‐proton radius differences, model dependence and energy dependence.
