By the interaction of diaryltin dichlorides with mono-, di- and tri-ethanolamines, twelve new complexes of the general formula, R2SnX2. nL (R = C6H5, o-tolyl, m-tolyl, and p-tolyl; n = 1 for L = MEA and DEA, and n = 2 for TEA) have been prepared and characterized. The analytical and i.r. spectral data show that all complexes are hexa-co-ordinated in which the two aryl groups occupy cis-positions, while the two chlorine atoms are trans to each other. The MEA and DEA act as bidentate ligands. bonding through both nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the Lewis bases while the TEA acts as unidentate and co-ordinates via the oxygen to the tin atom of the Lewis acid.
