We have observed the elastic neutral-current reaction ..nu../sub mu/+p..--> nu../sub mu/+p and compared it to the quasielastic reaction ..nu../sub mu/+n..--> mu../sup -/+p. We have measured the ratio of the two reactions to be 0.23 +- 0.09. (AIP)

Abstract A 1.5 m × 1.0 m × 0.6 m NeHe streamer chamber and high voltage pulsing system capable of 1.0 MV pulses with widths continuously variable from 10 to 20 ns has been developed by a University of Illinois - ANL group. The design and construction of the dc fast charge regulator, Marx generator, Blumlein pulse shaping network, transmission line, and chamber are described. Studies on the effects of increasing field emission and injection of free electrons into the pulse shaping network gap on pulse amplitude stability are reported. Under normal operating conditions, pulse amplitude stability of 2–3% rms has been achieved. Photographic and pulse monitoring systems are described and operating experience over two experimental runs is summarized.

We have measured elastic ..nu../sub ..mu../ and nu-bar/sub ..mu../ scattering on protons at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. We find R/sub NC/ = sigma(nu-bar/sub ..mu../p..-->..nu-bar/sub ..mu../p) / sigma(..nu../sub ..mu../p..--> nu../sub ..mu../p) = 0.44 +- 0.12 and R/sub numu/ = sigma(..nu../sub ..mu../p..--> nu../sub ..mu../p)/sigma(..nu../sub ..mu../n..--> mu../sup -/p) = 0.11 +- 0.03. The elastic Q/sup 2/ distribution is in good agreement with present knowledge of form factors and the Weinberg-Salam model. We find sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/ = 0.26 +- 0.06.
