Angular dependence of diffusional broadening of the Mössbauer line in a 57Co—copper single crystal

Abstract The angular dependence of the diffusional broadening of the Mossbauer line in a copper single crystal doped with cobalt-57 at 1030°C is obtained experimentally. A qualitative discussion of the results is presented.

Searching for the electric dipole moment of the photon

Abstract A shift of the 67Zn Mossbauer resonance line was observed when a ZnO single crystalline absorber was rotated with respect to the direction of the gamma-quanta. The experimental results could be explained by assuming the existence of an electric dipole moment of the photon. Two other alternative explanations are considered: the difference of the quadrupole splitting between the source and the absorber and the “interference effect”.

A Mössbauer furnace with a rotating sample-holder

Abstract A high-temperature vacuum or gas-filled furnace for Mossbauer effect studies with a rotating sample-holder is described. Any temperature in the range from room temperature up to 1200°C can be maintained utilizing an electronic dc thermoregulator. Temperature instability at high temperature is less than ±0.2°C for 24 h and the temperature gradient in the sample is of the same order.
