Ecological effects of some heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr) pollution of phytoplanktonic algae and zooplanktonic organisms in Sariyar Dam Reservoir in Turkey

Tahir Atici; Seyhan Ahiska; Ahmet Altındağ; Didem Aydin

Accumulation of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr) in water and plankton of Sarýyar Dam Lake (SDR) was seasonally studied from April, 2000 to December, 2004. In addition, seasonal changes in phytoplankton and zooplankton populations and species abundance were also determinate. Some physio-chemical parameters of water and their correlation with heavy metals were also determinated. The dominant phytoplanktonic algae determined were Choroococcus, Gomphospheria, Oscillatoria, Phormidium, Anabaena, Nostoc, Cystodinium, Dinobryon, Ankistrodesmus, Chlorella, Coelastrum, Oocystis, Pediastrum, Scenedesmus, Cosmarium, Oedogonium, Cyclotella, Achnanthes, Amphora, Anomoneis, Cocconeis, Cymbella, Diatoma, Diploneis, Fragilaria, Gomphonema, Navicula, Nitzschia, Nitzschia, Rhoicosphenia, Surirella and Synedra. The dominant zooplanktonic organisms determined were Asplachna priodonta, Brachionus angularis, Keratella quadrata, Keratella cochlearis, Keratella tropica, Polyarthra vulgaris, Proales decipiens, Bosmina longirostris, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, Chydorus sphaericus, Daphnia longispina, Diaphanosoma brachyurum, Macrothrix laticornis, Acanthocyclops robustus and Acanthodiaptomus denticornis. High concentrations of all heavy metals were recorded in the plankton. Hg was lowest and Pb highest; but the concentration of each metal varied seasonally.

The ethanol extracts from the fresh-water algae; Chara hispida L., Cladophora glomerata (Dilw.) Kόtz, C. fracta (Dilw.) Kόtz, Spirogyra gratiana Transeau, Mougeotia sp. (C.A. Agardh), Vaucheria sessilis (Vauch.) De Candolle, Geminella mutabilis (Breb.) Wille, the fresh-water plants; Ranunculus rionii Lagger and Ceratophyllum demersum L., as well as the marine algae; Sciniaia furcellata (Turn.) J. Agardh, Dictyota dichotoma (Huds.) Lam., Padina vickersiae Hoyt, Halopteris scoparia (L.) Sauvagau, and the sea grass; Posidonia oceanica (L.) Dell. were assessed in vitro for their antioxidant and anti-acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity test at 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg ml -1 and ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP) at 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg ml −1 concentrations. Total phenolic contents of the extracts were determined using Folin-Ciocalteaus reagent. The extracts were further analyzed qualitatively by LC-DAD-MS. S. gratiana had the best antioxidant activity, followed by R. rionii. LC-DAD-MS showed rich gallic acid and its ethyl ester contents in S. gratiana , while prosperous vitamin C content has been detected in P. oceanica for the first time in this study. S. gratiana possessed the highest inhibition (42.5±2.28%) at 2.0 mg ml −1 against AChE.

The fatty acid composition of the lipoid extracts of four marine alga species, Halopteris scoparia (L.) Sauvagau, Scinaia furcellata L., Sargassum natans (L.) J. Meyer, Padina vickersiae Hoyt, and the sea grass Posidonia oceanica L. as well as six freshwater alga species, namely Cladophora fracta (Dilw.) Kutz, C. glomerata (Dilw.) Kutz, Zygnema pectinatum (Vauch.) C. A. Agardh, Maugeotia sp. (C. A. Agardh), Vaucheria sessilis (Vauch.) De Candolle, and Spyrogyra gratiana Link. together with the aquatic plant Potomogeton perfoliatus L., collected from Turkish waters, was characterized by capillary GC-MS. Only the saturated fatty acids were found in the species investigated.

Most Abundance Diatom Tax a of Rivers in Turkey and Iran

Tahir Atici; Masoumeh Shams Tahir Atici; Masoumeh Shams

The study of diatoms is necessary because they are the sources of oxygen in rivers, and also constitut e the basic primary productivity chain and are used in de termining water pollution levels. However, in this st udy some large rivers of Turkey and Iran were compared in this resp ect and it was thought that the spread of diatom spe cies would contribute to Turkey and Iran diatom species. In th e rivers, a lot of diatoms which are known as polluti on indicator only Achnantheslanceolata(BrébissonexKützing)Grunow,Caloneis v ntricosa(Ehrenberg)F.Meister,Cyclotellameneghiniana Kützing, Diatomaelongatum(Lyngbye) C. Agardh, Gomphon emaolivaceum(Hornemann) Brébisson, Nitzschiasigmoidea(Nitzsch) W. Smith, Pinnulariabre bissonii(Kützing) Rabenhorst, Rhoicospheniacurvata(Küt zing) Grunow, Nitzschia palea(Kütz.)W. Sm., Ulnariaacus (Kü tz.) M. Aboal, Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Comp ȇre and and Gomphonematruncatum Ehrenberg in the Turkey and Iran rivers. The aim of this study is, to assess the di atom of Iranian rivers and evaluate as abundance relation t o Turkey rivers.

Reasons of Biology Teacher Candidates for Choosing the Department and their Academic Achievements

Tahir Atici

The purpose of this research is determination of the reasons of biology teacher candidates on their selection of biology teaching education and the effects of these reasons on their academic achievement level. Additionally, the reasons and academic achievement levels of the candidates were examined if they differ significantly according to the gender of the candidates. Quantitative data were collected and analyzed and bunched together in this study. Study involved the biology teacher candidates (N=66) who are second, third and fourth grade students of biology teaching department in 2010 – 2011 academic year. t test and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, r applied and SPSS for Windows software was used for evaluation of the datum. Findings show that two main reasons of biology teacher candidates for choosing biology teaching department are inadequacy of their university entrance examination score for other departments they wanted more and love both the profession of teaching and biology branch. The number of teacher candidate girls and their academic achievement levels are greater than that of boys. The relation between the academic achievement levels and the reasons of department choice were not seen. At the end of the research, some suggestions about better guidance for students towards the profession and the studies which could be carried out in the area were made.

Trochiscia (Chlorococcales) a new taxon from Central Anatolian Region, Turkey

Tahir Atici

A new species, Trochiscia anatolicum, is described from a fresh water habitat, Dam Lake in the middle Anatolian region. This new taxon was first found on examination of algal samples from Kesikkopru Dam Lake. Light microscopes indicate a clear relationship with species in the genus Trochiscia. Some of the characteristic features of the new taxon include a spines and irregular cell wall. And this taxon was under observation for two years.
