Abstract Living and environmental studies of housing planning, construction and operation have low priority in studies as compared to the conventional interests in cost, size, form, location and aesthetics. In 1994, the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) was founded due to the implementation of the Oslo peace agreement. Consequently, many living units have been built to alleviate housing problems with absence of specific studies related to the cultural distributions and environmental comfort of indoor spaces. Therefore, this study focuses on finding proper architectural and physical characteristics of indigenous houses throughout analyzing Gaza′s historical house layout architecturally and environmentally. Investigations have obviously achieved a significant guidance for future planning and construction.

Abstract There are a large number of apartment houses equipped with Gangi, a kind of linked corridor which connects many buildings, in northern Japan, that are provided mainly for winter use. We analyzed continued and open form as they relate to snow protection. From the residents point of view, our research clarified how to use Gangi in real life, how to remove the snow and also what is required for housing. Accordingly we arranged the ploblems and subjects of new house planning for the northern region. Finally, we tried to clarify the ideal image of Gangi and the common amenity space for apartment houses, and proposed some new design ideas.

Abstract In Hokkaido, a snowy and cold region of Japan, indoor playgrounds that allow children to play in an outdoor atmosphere have been growing in number. The important characteristics of space planning were clarified through the study of nine major indoor playgrounds and detailed analysis of three selected cases. Such indoor playgrounds serve as gathering points for people from a diverse range of generations, including infants, elementary and junior high school students, parents, grandparents, and groups. They provide a space that encourages various activities of not only children but also adults. The important space characteristics that enhance the environment for example are the consideration of various physical activities, proximity of play area and rest area which allow easy visual contact, appropriate relationship between the indoor playground and outdoor play area to encourage outdoor activities, and considerations for group.
