An evaluation of VDT operations through the two‐dimensional analysis of fixation points

Shin Saito; Susumu Saito; Takao Ohkubo

The aim of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of various kinds of VDT operations by using an analysis of eye movements and examining the distribution of gaze fixation points. Eye movements were detected by the “corneal reflection technique” and analyzed in terms of (a) tracing eye movements, (b) forming a matrix of fixation frequency, (c) describing the fixation area, and (d) adjusting the fixation vector. Five VDT operators involved in the development of computer software were selected as the subjects, with an average age of 24.8 years. Eye movements of the subjects were intermittently recorded throughout an 8‐hr working day. It was confirmed that an analysis of eye movements can be a meaningful way to characterize certain ergonomic aspects of VDT operations.

Psycho-Physiological Reactions of Vehicle Drivers under Long Distance Driving: An Evaluation of both Skilled and Unskilled Vehicle Drivers while Driving from Psycho-Psysiological Point of View

Takao Ohkubo

The human performances while driving of both skilled and unskilled drivers totally 4 male university students mainly between 22–24 years of age, were investigated on the three different kinds of road conditions such as a high speed automobile test course, a common road and the high way. The relationship between driving skill and psycho-physiological functions discussed. Results show the difference due to the degree of skill in driving with some such physiological parametres as pulse level and CFF. The external driving evironment and the driving hours were also greatly influential.
