Effects of luminance contrast on color spreading and illusory contour in the neon color spreading effect

The present study examined whether color spreading and illusory contours in the neon color spreading effect of Ehrenstein figures are governed by different mechanisms. In the experiment, Ehrenstein figures with colored crosses inserted in the central gaps were used. There were three luminance conditions: the luminance of the Ehrenstein figures was lower than, the same as, or higher than the luminance of the background. In each condition, 16 trials (2 sets of instructions × 8 repetitions) were conducted in a random order. Subjects were required to adjust the luminance of the colored crosses according to one of the two sets of instruction given before each trial. One was to adjust the upper and lower thresholds in the luminance of the colored crosses such that their color was seen to spread out of the crosses. The other was to adjust the thresholds such that circular illusory contours were visible. It was found that illusory contours disappeared and the color spreading remained when the crosses and the Ehrenstein figures were in or nearly in isoluminance or when the Ehrenstein figures and the background were in isoluminance. These results suggest that color spreading and illusory contours are governed by different mechanisms.

Individual differences in the encoding processes of egocentric and allocentric survey knowledge.

This study examined how different components of working memory are involved in the acquisition of egocentric and allocentric survey knowledge by people with a good and poor sense of direction (SOD). We employed a dual-task method and asked participants to learn routes from videos with verbal, visual, and spatial interference tasks and without any interference. Results showed that people with a good SOD encoded and integrated knowledge about landmarks and routes into egocentric survey knowledge in verbal and spatial working memory, which is then transformed into allocentric survey knowledge with the support of all three components, distances being processed in verbal and spatial working memory and directions in visual and spatial working memory. In contrast, people with a poor SOD relied on verbal working memory and lacked spatial processing, thus failing to acquire accurate survey knowledge. Based on the results, a possible model for explaining individual differences in spatial knowledge acquisition is proposed.

The effects of anxiety on the interpretation of emotion in the face–voice pairs

Anxious individuals have been shown to interpret others’ emotional states negatively. Since most studies have used facial expressions as emotional cues, we examined whether trait anxiety affects the recognition of emotion in a dynamic face and voice that were presented in synchrony. The face and voice cues conveyed either matched (e.g., happy face and voice) or mismatched emotions (e.g., happy face and angry voice). Participants with high or low trait anxiety were to indicate the perceived emotion using one of the cues while ignoring the other. The results showed that individuals with high trait anxiety were more likely to interpret others’ emotions in a negative manner, putting more weight on the to-be-ignored angry cues. This interpretation bias was found regardless of the cue modality (i.e., face or voice). Since trait anxiety did not affect recognition of the face or voice cues presented in isolation, this interpretation bias appears to reflect an altered integration of the face and voice cues among anxious individuals.

Serotonin Transporter Gene-Linked Polymorphism Affects Detection of Facial Expressions

Previous studies have demonstrated that the serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) affects the recognition of facial expressions and attention to them. However, the relationship between 5-HTTLPR and the perceptual detection of others facial expressions, the process which takes place prior to emotional labeling (i.e., recognition), is not clear. To examine whether the perceptual detection of emotional facial expressions is influenced by the allelic variation (short/long) of 5-HTTLPR, happy and sad facial expressions were presented at weak and mid intensities (25% and 50%). Ninety-eight participants, genotyped for 5-HTTLPR, judged whether emotion in images of faces was present. Participants with short alleles showed higher sensitivity (d′) to happy than to sad expressions, while participants with long allele(s) showed no such positivity advantage. This effect of 5-HTTLPR was found at different facial expression intensities among males and females. The results suggest that at the perceptual stage, a short allele enhances the processing of positive facial expressions rather than that of negative facial expressions.

Wriggling motion trajectory illusion.

In this paper, we report on a novel visual motion illusion. When hundreds of dots move in straight trajectories and random directions without colliding, the trajectories are perceived as wriggling rather than straight (Experiment 1). We examined the nature of this wriggling motion trajectory illusion via six separate experiments. The illusion was most pronounced when there were a large number of dots (Experiment 2). The illusion was independent of both the distance covered (Experiment 3) and the observers eye movements (Experiment 4) as well as the dot types (Experiment 5). We also showed that the proximity among the moving dots plays a role in the illusion (Experiment 6).

Polarity selectivity of spatial interactions in perceived contrast

The apparent contrast of a texture is reduced when surrounded by another texture with high contrast. This contrast-contrast phenomenon has been thought to be a result of spatial interactions between visual channels that encode contrast energy. In the present study, we show that contrast-contrast is selective to luminance polarity by using texture patterns composed of sparse elongated blobs. The apparent contrast of a texture of bright (dark) elements was substantially reduced only when it was surrounded by a texture of elements with the same polarity. This polarity specificity was not evident for textures with high element densities, which were similar to those used in previous studies, probably because such stimuli should inevitably activate both on- and off-type sensors. We also found that polarity-selective suppression decreased as the difference in orientation between the center and surround elements increased but remained for orthogonally oriented elements. These results suggest that the contrast-contrast illusion largely depends on spatial interactions between visual channels that are selective to on-off polarity and only weakly selective to orientation.

On–Off asymmetry in the perception of blur

Natural images appear blurred when imperfect lens focus reduces contrast energy at higher spatial frequencies. Here, we present evidence that perceived blur also depends on asymmetries between On (positive contrast polarities) and Off (negative contrast polarities) image signals. Psychophysical matching experiments involving natural and artificial stimuli suggest that attenuating Off signals at high spatial frequencies results in increased perceptual blur relative to similar attenuations of On signals. Results support the notion that Off image signals play an important role in blur perception.

Perceptual limits in a simulated "Cocktail party".

Numerosity judgments of simultaneous talkers were examined. Listeners were required to report the number of talkers heard when this number varied (1 to 13). Spatial location of talkers (1 or 6 locations), duration of talker voices (0.8xa0s, 5.0xa0s, and 15.0xa0s), and gender arrangement of talkers also were manipulated in four experiments. In all experiments, the proportion of correct numerosity judgments monotonically decreased as talker numbers increased. Perceptual limits, defined as talker numbers with proportion correct scores of 0.5, varied between 3 to 5 talkers, on average, depending on listening conditions, and were significantly higher for spatially separated talkers, for the longer voices, and for the mixed gender voices (Experiments 1, 2, and 3). In addition, Experiment 4 found that average numerosity response times increased monotonically over a range of one to four talkers. These results support the idea that, before counting talkers, listeners perceptually segregate talkers to render numerosity judgments. They also suggest that our functional auditory world for simultaneous voices may consist of, at most, three to five talkers depending on listening situations. In light of these results, possible causes for such perceptual limits are discussed.

On-off selectivity and asymmetry in apparent contrast: An adaptation study.

Using textures composed of sparse bright/dark elements that can activate either on or off sensors selectively, Sato, Motoyoshi, and Sato (2012) reported simultaneous contrast-contrast effects tuned for contrast polarity. As with contrast-contrast effects, prolonged viewing of high-contrast stimuli reduces the perceived contrast of a subsequently presented stimulus. The present study examined whether contrast aftereffects are also selective for luminance polarity using texture patterns composed of sparse bright/dark elements. Results revealed that contrast aftereffects are selective for luminance polarity (polarity selectivity) but that adaptation aftereffects occur asymmetrically depending on the polarity of the adapter (polarity asymmetry). Polarity selectivity and asymmetry in adaptation aftereffects are reduced but not completely diminished if adapter and test stimuli are presented to separate eyes (dichoptically). Our results support the idea that suprathreshold contrast perception and its adaptational shifts are jointly determined by responses between monocular and binocular units.

Temporal characteristics of depth perception from motion parallax

Temporal characteristics of depth perception from motion parallax were examined by modulating parallax intermittently while observers moved their head side to side. In Experiment 1, parallax of a fixed value was introduced only for the central 1/6 to 5/6 portion of each component head movement. It was found that the perceived depth was proportional to the temporal average of parallax-specified depth. In addition, observers did not notice any abrupt temporal change of depth. In Experiment 2, parallax was increased or decreased once per trial either at the center or the end of one of the component head movements, and observers judged the direction of depth change. Again, observers did not notice any abrupt change of depth. The percentage of correct responses was almost constant for large change amplitudes. Reaction times to the change were over 1 s even for the largest changes, and it increased for smaller change amplitudes. These results indicate that the mechanism for depth from parallax has a configuration similar to that proposed for structure from motion, and that it involves a temporal integration process with a relatively long time-constant.
