In the realization of end-to-end Machine-to-Machine (M2M) applications it is necessary to provide interworking architectures between the service layer platforms and underlying communication networks. The oneM2M and 3 GPP standards organizations have recently taken the initiative to develop such interworking architectures. This paper aims to provide an overall view of these interworking architectures, which enables exposure of various underlying network services for M2M applications running on top of the service layer, such as device triggering, device location, device management, etc.

This paper mainly explains an enhanced domain handover scheme for VoLTE (Voice over LTE) called eSRVCC. The scheme is essential in order to ensure the carrier-grade voice call quality; especially during the network migration phase from legacy circuit switched system to the All IP based EPS (Evolved Packet System). In addition, this paper explains the new mechanisms to support VoLTE in roaming scenarios.

Currently, many sensor data networks are managed using machine-to-machine (M2M) or machine type communications (MTCs) technologies. One of the key factors for the success of sensor data networks is in developments of international M2M/MTC standards. As third generation partnership project (3GPP) and oneM2M are actively working on standardising M2M/MTC specifications for 3GPP core networks and M2M common service layer, this study reviews the ongoing activities in 3GPP and oneM2M standardisation bodies, in the area of machine type or M2M communications, focusing on enhancing device, service platform, and mobile network technologies that can be useful in achieving cost efficiencies in sensor data networks.
