Waterborne fluoropolymers for paint use

Akihiko Asakawa; Masao Unoki; Takao Hirono; Takashi Takayanagi

Abstract A cross-linkable fluoropolymer emulsion has been studied. We report the synthesis of fluoropolymer emulsion having a hydroxy functionality, which could be cross-linked with water dispersible polyisocyanate. In this paper, a novel fluoropolymer emulsion including carbonyl units which is available for one-package coating is described. Carbonyl units were introduced to the fluoropolymer particles by seeded copolymerization of acrylic monomers. The emulsion gave a transparent film which exhibits good solvent resistance and mechanical properties. Moreover, a new hydrophilic film-surface modifier has been synthesized and evaluated in order to prevent the dirt line on an outer wall. The paint film made of these chemicals shows high resistance to weathering after accelerated weathering test, and high performance of reducing dirt is observed in an outdoor exposure test.

Progress of fluoropolymers on coating applications: Development of mineral spirit soluble polymer and aqueous dispersion

Takashi Takayanagi; Masaaki Yamabe

Fluoro-olefine vinyl ether copolymer (FEVE) has been well known as highly durable polymer for paints industry. FEVE has been widely used for ambient temperature curable solvent-borne paints. In this report, recent developments of FEVE copolymer are reported for mild-solvent paint system and water-borne paint system. Firstly, mineral spirit soluble FEVE copolymers are mentioned for both 1-component and crosslinkable 2-component mild-solvent paint systems. Secondly, FEVE aqueous dispersion polymers are mentioned for non-crosslinkable 1-component latex paint system, crosslinkable 2-component emulsion paint system with isocyanate as containing high OH value and for 1-component crosslinkable emulsion paint system containing carboxyl functionality reactive with hydrazide.
