Abstract Human behaviors are formed and evaluated by their performance shaping factor (PSF). In this study, I examined industrial plant maintenance tasks and considered the countermeasure for work improvement through PSF. The aim of this study is to propose an original PSF for maintenance tasks and to characterize the PSF by structural analysis. PSF had been utilized to evaluate human reliability. But in this study, the above characterization was investigated not only from the standpoint of human reliability but also from the viewpoint of work efficiency and workload. Lastly, some indications for work improvement of plant maintenance tasks were suggested based on the character of the PSF. Relevance to industry This study has relevance to industry with respect to the aim of work improvement in industrial plant maintenance tasks. To achieve this aim, maintenance tasks were examined in terms of human performance shaping factor. Through a series of investigations, several indications of countermeasures for work improvement were proposed.

Studies in tangible interaction have investigated how physical object attributes can stand for abstract content (e.g. IMPORTANT IS HEAVY). A less expensive and more practical alternative to dynamically change, for example, the size, weight or temperature of tangibles, could be using color-to-abstract mappings. Grounded in embodied cognition theory, a number of color-for-haptic substitutions are derived (e.g. DARK COLORS ARE HEAVY). These substitutions are then tested for their effectiveness with 15 conceptual metaphors (e.g. IMPORTANT IS DARK COLOR). In four conditions (haptic, color, haptic-color congruence, haptic-color incongruence) 48 participants matched objects of different colors, sizes, weights or temperatures with abstract words. The results indicate that color can replace haptic attributes in metaphoric mappings and that designers need to explicitly design for color, because metaphor-incongruent colors can hamper the effectiveness of metaphorical mappings. The results also indicate that an embodied experiential view can circumvent arguing about specific colors with high-level symbolic meanings.

Our work investigates new designs for notification cues, leveraging knowledge about insects that people gained through lifelong experiences. We conducted a user study to identify peoples knowledge about nine typical and easily differentiated insect-species. We conclude that this information can be used in creating notifications that can be perceived intuitively. We discuss how results of this study can inform design decisions in all four design dimensions of notification systems, and consider the future potential of notifications based on such biomimicry patterns.

Color is a powerful visual property and is used to make interferences about the world. However, no theoretical framework is available that explains precisely where color associations come from and how they affect psychological functioning, making it difficult to predict how color affects human-computer interaction. This paper aims at closing this gap by suggesting an Embodied Cognition view on color, which assumes that the aggregate of our perceptual color experiences is part of the mental representation of tactile object attributes and thus systematically influences our abstract thinking via the process of metaphorical mapping. An empirical study is presented in which hues and saturation of objects were manipulated via Augmented Reality. Participants matched objects to abstract concepts, e.g., happiness. 83 % of the participants’ choices were correctly predicted, suggesting that color information is considered during the processing of abstract information. Eight color-to-abstract-concept mappings are recommended and possible areas of application are discussed.

各空港にはそれぞれ異なる飛行場レイアウト, 運用制限が存在するため,空港ごとに航空機の走 行に関する特徴がみられる.近年はLCC便の増加 や運航の多頻化により航空交通量が増加している. 特に繁忙空港では時間帯による過度な交通の集中 が生じるため,空港面交通の混雑の緩和など航空 機の運航効率の向上が課題となっている. このような課題に対して,滑走路処理容量を最 大限に活用し,航空機地上走行を円滑化するため の交通管理手法が求められている.航空交通管理 手法には地上走行のスケジュール管理などがあり, 空港の特徴を把握して交通管理手法を使い分ける ことが欠かせない. 本稿では,関西国際空港を対象として,今後の 交通量増大に対応し,円滑な空港面交通流を目指 した交通管理手法の開発を目的として,航空機の 地上走行データより空港面の交通量および到着機 /出発機の走行経路を分析し,走行に関する特徴, 傾向および走行時間に影響をもたらす因子の抽出 を行った結果を示す.

Image-schematic metaphors are a concept from cognitive linguistics that describes basic building blocks of how we make sense of the world. These metaphors represent users’ mental models and following them in interaction design increases intuitive use. In this paper, we empirically test whether the predictions of the metaphors “important is heavy – unimportant is light” and “black is heavy – white is light” as well as their combination “important is black – unimportant is light” hold true. For this, 20 Japanese subjects had to judge the physical weight of differently colored and weighted objects and infer on the importance of data which was stored on or contained by them. We found that data stored on or in black (compared to white) and heavy (compared to light) objects was perceived as more important, confirming the metaphors.

The aim of this study is to examine the differences of operability between dominant hand and non-dominant hand in car driving context, especially in operating of touch screen of car navigation system. For the operation of touch screen of car navigation system during car driving, the primary task is of course car driving, and the secondary task is the operation of the touch screen for a car navigation system. In this study, we drove 2 kinds of experiments; the 1st experiment was to investigate the basic usage for touch screen, and the 2nd experiment was to examine the characteristics under dual tasks; the primary and the secondary tasks. As a result, in case of single task, we could find significant differences between with dominant hand and with non-dominant hand. On the other hand, in case of dual task, we could not find significant differences so much, but only when the secondary task was not so complicated we could find statistical difference between dominant hand and non-dominant hand.

The focus of this study is a humans ability to make full use of listening and hearing. This ability consists of dividing auditory information into a signal and a noise. To evaluate the risk of using headphones, the study investigated the auditory perception when a warning sound is given in the presence of environmental noise.
