SummaryExercise-induced alterations in cardiac function during graded cycling with submaximal and maximal intensities were studied in 13 trained and 13 untrained young men. Stroke volume (SV) and stroke index (SI) at rest and during submaximal and maximal exercise, determined by impedance cardiography, were consistently greater in the trained than in the less fit group. Traning-induced bradycardia was evident in the trained group at rest and during submaximal exercise. Even when SV and SI were compared at the same absolute heart rate and left ventricular ejection time, those for the trained group were markedly greater than those for the untrained. SV for the untrained group was relatively diminished above the work rate corresponding to the anaerobic threshold. The difference in SV during exercise may be attributed to inadequate filling due to the smaller stretch of myocardial fibers in diastole and/or lesser systolic emptying of the left ventricle due to the reduced myocardial contractility in systole of untrained individuals.

SummaryFifty-three out of 70 patients with drug-induced liver injury showed an immunological response to the drug using either the lymphocyte transformation test or the macrophage migration inhibitory test (MI test) or both. Both the separated lymphocyte culture and the microvolume whole blood culture technique are available as assay methods. The latter method is simpler and the results of both methods are comparable. The administration of a synthetic copolymer of polyadenylic and polyuridylic acid (poly A: U) to the culture medium enhances the lymphocyte response to antigen and is therefore very useful to detect weak responses.

In some types of drug eruptions, a positive blastoid transformation is frequently seen in peripheral lymphocytes when they are stimulated in vitro with the causative drug in the presence of autologous serum. In these cases, a soluble fraction prepared from guinea pig skin can replace the autologous serum in inducing the lymphocyte transformation, whereas either the mitochondrial or microsomal fraction of guinea pig skin instead of the autologous serum is less effective. Moreover, in fixed drug eruption, the addition of soluble skin material fractionated by gel filtration with Sephadex G-100 (FrD1 is as effective as the autologous sera in inducing lymphocyte transformation. These results suggest that the soluble fraction of skin is related to the pathogenesis of fixed and exanthematic drug eruptions as a carrier substance of drugs.

Stereo-controlled substitution on tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligands and chirality tuning of luminescence in their lanthanide complexes

Takashi Yamada; Satoshi Shinoda; Jun’ichi Uenishi; Hiroshi Tsukube

Abstract A series of tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligands including one or two asymmetric centers were synthesized in a stereo-controlled fashion, and their Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ complexes offered characteristic luminescence properties depending on the ligand stereochemistry.

Cytochrome c-crown ether complexes as a new type of biocatalysts effective in methanol

Takashi Yamada; Koichi Kikawa; Satoshi Shinoda; Hiroshi Tsukube

Abstract Water-soluble cytochrome c was readily solubilized in methanol by addition of several crown ethers, and the resulting complexes catalyzed oxidation of pinacyanol chloride with hydrogen peroxide more effectively than polyethylene glycolated cytochrome c in the organic solvent.

The extraction equilibria of Am(III) and Eu(III) by using a tripodal ligand, tris(2‐pyridylmethyl)amine (tpa), with various lipophilic anions have been investigated. The extractability of both Am(III) and Eu(III) was increased by the combination of tpa and counteranions due to a synergistic effect. The separation factors between Am(III) and Eu(III) were also increased from 7.6 to 49 by the combination of counteranions and organic solvents. The extraction equilibria of Am(III) and Eu(III) with tpa in 1,2‐dichloroethane were determined by slope analysis. It was found that three anions and one molecule of the ligand coordinated to Am(III) and Eu(III) was extracted regardless of the anions.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the dissemination of cancer cells at laparoscopic hysterectomy according to the intraperitoneal cytology. Patients with endometrial cancer underwent total laparoscopic modified radical hysterectomy. Peritoneal wash cytology was performed on entering the peritoneal cavity before surgical preparation and just after hysterectomy. Seventy-eight patients underwent laparoscopic hysterectomy for endometrial cancer. Among the 15 patients who had positive intraperitoneal cytology on entering the peritoneal cavity, 10 converted to negative intraperitoneal cytology after hysterectomy. In contrast, among the 63 patients who had negative intraperitoneal cytology on entering the peritoneal cavity, 2 converted to positive intraperitoneal cytology after hysterectomy. While surgery can reduce the number of cancer cells in the peritoneal cavity, leakage can occur, as seen in some cases of hysterectomy. Careful washing must be performed after hysterectomy.

We present the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of a 71-year-old woman with a cardiac extension of intravenous leiomyoma (IVL) that arose from the uterus, extended to the inferior vena cava (IVC), and reached the right ventricle through the right ovarian vein. Radiologic-pathologic correlation showed that the intravascular cord-like mass originating from the IVC and extending to the right ventricle was composed of degenerated smooth muscle cells with a number of large vessels that were regarded as arteries; moreover, the arteries within the cord-like mass appeared to be looping internally. Given the disappearance of the right ovarian venous wall around the IVL pathologically, extracting the tumor from the ovarian vein during an operation is considered to be impossible retrospectively. Also it was difficult to identify even the intravenous extension of the uterine leiomyoma histopathologically. Therefore, contrast-enhanced CT, in particular arterial phase imaging, provided important information that revealed the mass, range, and path of the lesion, ensuring that an appropriate operative plan could be drawn up and the tumor completely excised.

nothing relevant. They came to us with symptoms of bouts of diarrhea, unpleasant feelings in the lower abdomen, excretin of mucus occasionally tinged with a small amount of blood for a few months duration. Physical examinations revealed no superficial lymph node enlargement, no palpable liver nor spleen. Hematological studies disclosed no pathological findings except relative lymphocytosis in two cases. Laboratory studies on serum showed total protein levels of normal ranges and nothing suggestive of malabsorption syndrome or protein losing gastroenteropathy. Endoscopic examinations of the colon and rectum revealed numerous, uniform, slightly elevated, round or elliptical excrescences of about 2 mm in diameter with smooth, glistening and somewhat pale or pinkish surfaces scattered over the mucosa of the rectum and the colon. Barium enema examinations showed numerous, uniform, round or elliptical radiolucent foci of about 2-3 m m in diameter scattered throughout the entire colon or limited mainly to the left half of the colon. These foci resembled to those described by Golden and Ichikawa about lymph follicle hyperplasia of the terminal ileum. Pathological examinations of biopsy specimens disclosed hyperplasia of lymph follicles in the tunica submucosa or within the tunica mucosa propria without proliferation of the mucosa itseelf. No neoplastic changes were observed. Histological findings also resembled to those observed in the cases of lymph follicle hyperplasia of the terminal i leum described by Golden and Ichikawa. As to prognosis the symptoms disappeared usually within several months and it has also been confirmed that the lesions disappeared without t reatment in all the four cases on whom reesxaminations were performed from 2 months to one and a half years after their initial examinations. The lesions are considered to be transient. The lesions should be differentiated from multiple polyposis, inflammatory polyposis of ulcerative colitis and tuberculosis of the colon, several types of lymphatic tissue hyperplasia of the alimentary tract such as lymph follicle hyperplasia of the terminal ileum by Ichikawa (Nonsclerosing ileitis of Golden), Dysgammaglobulinemia with nodular lymphoid hyperplasia by Hermans, benign lymphoma of the rectum, benign lymphoid polyps of the colon in children and so forth. Multiple lymphomatous polyposis of the gastrointestinal tract and multiple colonic polyps of leukemic origin should also be ruled out.
