Measurement of light incident on mobile displays in various environments

— By using a single-lens digital camera with an attached 180° fisheye lens, the incident light at the surface of a mobile display in 112 different environments, including outdoor and indoor environments and inside an automobile, were measured. The data were analyzed for some typical environments in which mobile displays are used. The results of this research can be used in the design of reflective and transflective LCDs, making maximum use of ambient light.

A 23cm-diagonal, reflective color TFT-LCD with 1024H × 480V pixels using low-temperature poly-Si TFT has been developed for mobile-PC applications. The integrated selector switches require less area to implement drivers, which leads to a narrower edge-frame of the LCD panel. The AC-common driving significantly reduces power consumption to achieve low power dissipation of 0.7W

56.1: Novel Pixel Structured High Resolution Transflective poly-Si TFT LCDs

A 2.0 inch-diagonal new transflective full-color TFT-LCD with 960H × 220V dots using low-temperature poly-Si LTPS TFT has been developed. This newly developed transflective LCD shows 70% higher transmittance and twice or higher contrast ratio than those of a conventional LCD. We also have developed a new adjusting sampling circuit for video signals to remove image blurring, or “Ghost” effect. Thereby this LCD provides images in higher resolution and visibility for mobile devices regardless of situations used indoors or outdoors.
