A new D-VHS system developed on the basis of the VHS video tape recording format has been developed for recording digital data compatible with digital broadcast systems. The system can handle a variety of digital formats to meet the diverse needs of multimedia applications.

A VCR with built-in integrated receiver decoder (IRD) has been developed for recording and playing back DISH Network digital broadcast. The system is based on the D-VHS format and can record MPEG as a bit-stream. D-VHS is an evolutional expansion of the VHS format and makes possible various types of recording applications that meet the demands of the digital age while preserving the VHS infrastructure. This paper describes IRD built-in recorder and the recording and playback systems based on D-VHS MPEG format.
