The auxiliary resonant commutated pole (ARCP) inverter is well-known by its small EMI and switching loss. However, in the high voltage-high power application, there exist some problems such as the difficulty of the complete ZVS realization, influence of the conducting inductance and so forth. In this paper, the characteristics of the ARCP inverter are analysed, with consideration of the conducting inductance influence. The useful analytical results are obtained and confirmed by the experiment.

Recently, soft-switching techniques have been gradually introduced into DC-AC inverters and DC-DC power converters. The resonance phenomena generated by the inductor and capacitor are usually employed to achieve the soft-switching of main power switches and diodes in these power conversion circuits. In this paper, novel test equipment for resonant circuits is proposed and analysed, enabling the examination of the performance characteristics of the inductor and capacitor in high-voltage resonant circuits by using a relatively low voltage power supply.

A novel firing control circuit for the ZVS operation and overcurrent protection of the main power switches in the ARCP three phase inverter is presented, which is applied to auxiliary AC power supply system of the electric railway rolling stock. Since the proposed circuit is composed of only an AC current transformer, four comparators and two AND gates, the circuit is simple and its operation is reliable. Also, the limited value of the overcurrent is easily adjusted by the predetermined reference value of the comparators. The superior performance characteristics are confirmed by the experiments.
