CAMELOT: collaborative and multimedia environment for learners on teams

Takashi Fuji; Takeshi Tanigawa; Masahiro Inui; Takeo Saegusa

In the business-systems-design learning environment, there may be more than one solution to any given problem. For instance, the data model will be different depending on each learner’s perspective. Accordingly, group learning systems are very effective in this domain. We have developed a collaborative and multimedia environment for learners on teams (CAMELOT) using the ‘nominal group technique’ for group problem solving. In this paper, the basic framework of the collaborative learning system and the effectiveness of collaborative learning in designing the data model are described. By using CAMELOT, each learner learns how to analyse through case studies and how to collaborate with his or her group in problem solving. Learners come to a deeper understanding from using CAMELOT than from studying independently because they can reach better solutions through discussion, tips from other learners and examination of one another’s individual works.

Using a satellite communication network, we developed a distance learning system to be used in the human resources development of communication and information technology in the Asian-Pacific area. The combined use of a distance learning system and individual learning by CAI is effective in overcoming the weak point that students fail to gain a deep understanding because distance learning tends to fall into one-sided communication from the teacher to the students. For the transmission of CAI materials on a satellite communication network, a transmission mechanism that does not cause data congestion on the network is required. We had mainly developed two technologies for the real-time transmission of CAI materials on a satellite communication network. One is an error control mechanism for situations in which we cannot ignore the delay time. The other is a technique for reduction of the amount of transmitted data. We conducted experimental international distance learning in cooperation with China and Thailand and confirmed the effect of our developing technology for real-time transmission of CAI materials.

In the Business Systems Design learning environment, there may be more than one solution to any given problem. We have developed CAMELOT (Collaborative and Multimedia Environment for Learners on Teams) [10] using the Nominal Group Technique for group problem solving. This paper describes the basic framework of the collaborative learning system, the effectiveness of collaborative learning in designing the Data Model, and how to apply AI technologies such as rule-based and case-based reasoning to the system. By using CAMELOT, each learner learns how to analyze through case studies and how to cooperate with a group in problem solving. Learners come to a deeper understanding from using CAMELOT than from studying independently because they can reach better solutions through discussion, tips from other learners, examination of one anothers individual works, and pedagogical actions using case-based reasoning.

In the information engineering learning environment, there may be more than one solution to any given problem. We have developed CAMELOT [2] using the Nominal Group Technique for group problem solving. This paper describes the collaborative learning support system on the Internet, the effectiveness of collaborative learning in designing the data model, and how to apply AI technologies such as rule-based and case-based reasoning to the system. Learners come to a deeper understanding from using CAMELOT than from studying independently because they can reach better solutions through discussion, tips from other learners, examination of individual works, and pedagogical actions using case-based reasoning.
