Societies : evolutionary and comparative perspectives

Talcott Parsons

Parsons T Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, Prentice-Hall, 1966. 120 p. The focus in this volume is on the most comprehensive unit ordinarily studied by sociologists, i.e., the total society. Both an evolutionary and a comparative perspective guides this study of societies. The evolutionary perspective conceives of the human as integral to the organic world, and human society and culture as properly analyzed in the general framework appropriate to the life process. The principle of evolution is firmly established as applying to the world of living things, and the social aspect of human life must be included. Such basic concepts of organic evolution as variation, selection, adaptation, differentiation, and integration belong at the center of concern, when appropriately adjusted to social and cultural subject matter. Sociocultural evolution has proceeded by variation and differentiation from simple to progressively more complex forms. The immense variability of human patterns of action is 1 of the most important facts about the human condition. Seen from this point of view, there are 4 interdependent yet in certain respects independent aspects of the theoretical problems at hand: 1) the general conceptual scheme of the social system which underlies all sociological analysis must be used, whatever the size and functional importance of the system of reference relative to other systems; 2) the problems of the society must be considered that arise from its being a type of social system which is more inclusive of controls over action than all others and which hence has special features requiring special analysis; 3) concern must be directed to the evolutionary development of societies, both as wholes and in their principal structural parts; and 4) variability must also be considered as a problem distinct from but interdependent with that of evolutionary stage and sequence. A broad and tentative schema that divides the evolution of societies (so far) into 3 stages--primitive, intermediate, and modern--is presented. The Sick Role and the Role of the Physician Reconsidered

Talcott Parsons

The main substance of this paper was presented orally at a meeting of the Sick Role, organized and chaired by Andrew Twaddle. It was a commentary on four papers and the oral discussion of them. In response to these the paper first discusses the relation of the sick role to deviant behavior and the motivation to become and remain ill. The position was taken that the author never had meant to confine the category of illness to deviant behavior, though its negative valuation should not be forgotten. Nor had he confined it to cases of acute illness, omitting consideration of chronic and other types. The most important issue, however, concerned the structure of the relation between physician and patient. Though insisting that interaction between them is two-way, not one-way, the author insisted that the relation is basically asymmetrical because of the physicians expertise in health matters, gained through training and experience, and his special fiduciary responsibility for the care of the sick. In this respect the relationship is different from others such as the competitive market or the democratic association, but is comparable to the relation of teacher and student in higher education.

An Analytical Approach to the Theory of Social Stratification

Talcott Parsons

The present paper is an attempt to formulate and illustrate a generalized approach to the theory of social stratification. This field has, in spite of its central importance, been in a notably undeveloped stae. The emergence of a highly generalized conceptual scheme in social theory which has elsewhere been traced by the author suggests the possibility of a more thorough theoretical approach than has hitherto been possible. Social stratification, here regarded as the differential ranking of the human individuals who compose a given social system and their treatment as relatively superior or inferior, may be analyzed in terms of the following classification scheme: (I) membership in a kinship unit, (2) personal qualities, (3) achievements, (4) possessions, (5) authority, and (6) power.

Capitalism In Recent German Literature: Sombart and Weber

Talcott Parsons

of thought has been its rather abstract generality; its formulation in terms implying, or at least not denying, universal applicability wherever human economic life is lived. With the general atti? tude thus assumed it has perforce tended to neglect the economic problems connected with the growth and development of types of economic society, and in particular with the working out of the differences between, and the specific characteristics of, the different cultural epochs. There has been, however, another major strain in modern thought, which has laid its main emphasis on this aspect of the problems of society, and in particular of economic life. Its prin? cipal, though by no means exclusive, field of influence has been Germany, and its intellectual soil more than anything else the romantic movement in its many different phases. It has been pre-eminently occupied with the problems of history, and among its most important accomplishments is the formulation of vari? ous philosophies of history, in Germany notably those of Hegel and Karl Marx. It forms the background of the theories which this paper is to discuss.

Some Considerations on the Theory of Social Change

Talcott Parsons

Theoretical analysis of change should distinguish between processes which maintain the equilibrium of a system and structural changes wherein a system moves from one state of equilibrium to another. Structural change occurs when disturbances in or around a system are sufficient to overcome the forces of equilibrium. For social systems one source of disturbance is alteration in the relation of the system to its environment which produces deficits in the input of goal attainment to acting units. When such units are performing multiple functions there is pressure toward structural differentiation, an important category of structural change. Differentiation can not occur, however, unless concomitant processes of social reorganization provide facilities for performance of the functions in the new differentiated context and patterns of normative legitimation and support. Successful differentiation involves normative reorganization at four levels: (1) the provision of opportunity through the emancipation of facilities from ascriptive ties; (2) inclusion of differentiated units in higher level collectivity structures; (3) upgrading of norms to higher levels of generality; (4) extension of values to legitimize new functional units. The processes and conditions of differentiation are illustrated by analysis of a case important to rural sociology, the separation of household and producing unit. The author is professor of sociology at Harvard University. *
