Enhanced transvaginal sonographic depiction of caput succedaneum prior to labor

David M. Sherer; Tamara Allen; Fabio Ghezzi; L F Gonçalves

Third trimester transvaginal sonography has been applied infrequently to enhance visualization of the anatomy of the presenting fetal part when positioned deep in the maternal pelvis.t-4 We present an unusual case of caput succedaneum occurring in a patient prior to labor, in which resolution on transabdominal ultrasonograms (impaired by severe oligohydramnios and fetal positioning) was significantly enhanced with transvaginal sonography.

Ultrasonography of large maternal umbilical hernia containing small bowel in pregnancy

David M. Sherer; Ovadia Abulafia; Tamara Allen

The umbilicus is a known weak area of the abdominal wall and, as such, a common site of herniation. Umbilical hernias are more common in females. Known predisposing factors are obesity and parity (1). We present an unusual case in which sonography confirmed the presence of a large umbilical hernia containing peritoneal fluid and loops of small bowel during pregnancy in a morbidly obese patient.

Sonographic Diagnosis of a Viable Ampullary Tubal Pregnancy at 14 Weeks Gestation

David M. Sherer; Susan A. Smith; Tamara Allen; James R. Woods

Tubal pregnancies rupture commonly between 6 and 10 weeks gestation. An unusual, sonographically diagnosed, viable 14-week ampullary tubal pregnancy is presented. The multiple sonographic growth parameters were appropriate for gestational age. Expedient surgery was performed.

Endovaginal Sonographic Associated Features of a T-Shaped Uterus Due to In Utero Exposure to Diethyistilbestrol (DES):

David M. Sherer; Tamara Allen; James R. Woods

In utero exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen, affects structures arising in the mullerian duct system of female fetuses. Transabdominal sonography has been found to be a nonionizing, noninvasive alternative to hysterosalpingography in diagnosing these congenital abnormalities. Endovaginal sonography has shown enhanced resolution of the female pelvic organs. The endovaginal features of a T-shaped uterus due to in utero DES exposure are presented in a woman with infertility.
