Preliminary Evaluation of Novel Triglyceride-Based Nanocomposites for Biomedical Applications

This work describes the development and characterization of triglyceride-based magnetic nanocomposites for application in magnetic hyperthermia and controlled drug delivery. The magnetic solid lipid nanocomposites (MSLN) constituted by mixtures of trilaurin-tricaprylin and trilaurin-tricaprin have been successfully obtained by emulsification-solvent evaporation method. The developed MSLNs were subjected to an external oscillating magnetic field and showed significant hyperthermia. The samples were exposed to frequencies of 688 and 869 kHz causing, respectively, a temperature increase of 15.5 and 22.7 °C (trilaurin-tricaprylin) and 17.3 and 26.1 °C (trilaurin-tricaprin). Also, in vitro assays in the absence of magnetic field showed that the triglyceride-based formulations were able first to encapsulate and then to sustained release an antitumoural hydrophobic drug. After 72 h of assay trilaurin-tricaprylin and trilaurin-tricaprin released 73 and 55% of their cargo, respectively. In addition, MSLN exhibited low in vitro cytotoxic activity against human neutrophils.

Avaliação da Goma Guar no desenvolvimento de comprimidos matriciais de liberação controlada de teofilina

Guar gum (GG) has been widely used in drug delivery systems due to its low cost and nontoxicity. Theophylline controlled release tablets were prepared by directly compressed method using two polymers such as HPMC K 100M (hydrophilic polymer) and Guar Gum (natural polymer), isolated or in mixture (GG:HPMC 3:1 and GG:HPMC 1:3). The formulated tablets were evaluated for: weight variation, diameter, height, hardness and friability. All the parameters were within the acceptable limits. The swelling test was performed in distilled water for 4 hours, it was determined by the difference in weight of the dry and swollen tablet. The dissolution test was performed in distilled water (900 mL, 37 ± 0.5oC, 50 rpm, apparatus II) for 8 hours. The results showed that guar gum alone could not control the theophylline release effectively for 8 hours. Matrix tablet prepared from GG: HPMC (3:1) is a better formulation for the sustained released matrix tablets of theophylline.

Cashew gum and maltrodextrin particles for green tea ( Camellia sinensis var A ssamica ) extract encapsulation

Cashew gum and maltodextrin microcapsules containing green tea leaf extracts were made using a spray-dryer. Green tea extracts were submitted to cytotoxicity analysis and characterization of bioactive compounds. Three formulations of microcapsules were performed, which were then submitted to characterization through morphological study, particle diameter and distribution, zeta potential, Exploratory Differential Calorimetry, entrapment efficiency, dissolution test and X-ray diffraction. The extract had a high bioactive compound content and no cytotoxicity was observed. The amorphous microcapsules presented irregular shapes with a circular predominance and dentate surface, mean diameters varying from 2.50 to 3.64 μm, solubility ranging from 63% to 72.66%. Low values of microencapsulation efficiency, zeta potencial and dissolution profile were observed. The microparticles based on the dry extract of green tea present potential as a food ingredient and as a promoter of health benefits.
