CHONDROMA OF THE NASAL CAVITY AND NASOPHARYNX -A CASE OF CHONDROMA ARISING FROM THE NASAL SEPTUM-

Toru Takimoto; Tameo Miyazaki; Tomokazu Yoshizaki; Koh Masuda

Chondromas of the nasal septum are rare. A case of chondroma originating in the left side of the nasal septum is reported. The patient, a 61-year-old female, presented bilateral nasal obstruction, headache, and nasal bleeding. The tumor was removed surgically through the transpalatal approach under general anesthesia. No recurrence was noticed after 6 months follow-up.

Establishment of an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome-positive subline of Ramos (Ramos/NPC) following infection of Ramos with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC)-derived EBV.

An Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome-positive epithelial hybrid cell line, NPC-KT, derived from the fusion of primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells with a human epithelial cell line of adenoid origin has previously been described (Takimoto, Kamide, and Umeda, 1984a; Takimoto, Ogura, Sato, and Hatano, 1984b; Takimoto, Ogura, Sato, Umeda, and Hatano, 1985). The NPC-KT cells produce virus (NPC virus) with both transforming and lytic properties. An EBV genome-negative human lymphoblastoid cell line, Ramos, was infected with NPC virus. Three months after infection, more than 90% of the cell population expressed EBV-associated nuclear antigen (EBNA). Approximately 40% of the cells exhibited a brilliant pattern, whereas the remaining 50% of the cells showed a faint granular pattern. The result suggests that there may be heterogeneity in NPC virus.

Effect of 12-O-Tetradecanoylphorbol-13-Acetate (TPA) pn Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-Infected Cells

We have examined if 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) enhances soft agar clonability in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-infected cells on the basis of interaction between EBV and TPA. When primary human cord blood lymphocytes (HUCLs) were exposed to two different strains of EBV (B95-8 and NPC-KT) and seeded in soft agar medium containing TPA (0.25 ng/ml), it was observed that the number of transformed colonies increased. However, TPA did not enhance the number of colonies in two EBV genome-positive epithelial hybrid cell lines (NPC-KT and D98/HR-1).

Smooth pursuit eye movement and predictability.

An experiment was designed to study the target predictability subserving pursuit eye movements.Horizontal eye movements were measured by binocular recording of the electronystagmography (ENG) in 18 normal subjects. Targets were projected on a screen and moved horizontally at a constant velocity (12°/sec) and fixed-cycle (0.1 Hz). The maximum displacement of the target was 30° from center. Near the center of the screen, targets were caused to disappear by a mechanical shutter for three short intervals (417, 833, 1250 msec). Horizontal angular deviations of these intervals were 5°, 10°, 15° respectively.Smooth pursuit eye movements were maintained and no saccadic eye movements were recorded by tracking 5° center off stimuli. Under 10° and 15° center off stimuli, searching saccades occurred after 300 msec from the disappearence of the target and corrective saccades occurred after 200-240 msec from the reappearence of the target. Smooth pursuit eye movements were maintained for about 300 msec without visual stimuli. Our results suggest that target predictability contributes to the pursuit system.

A 57-year-old patient with nasopharyngeal carcinoma was treated with interferons, anti-cancer drugs and irradiation. He developed suppurative meningitis three years after the diagnosis and died from acute respiratory insufficiency. At autopsy edema of the left cerebral hemisphere was marked and uncal and cingular herniation were noted.Undifferentiated cancer cells were found in the left posterior wall of the sphenoid and left pyramidal bones, but there was no infiltration of cancer cells to the optic nerves or pituitary. The route of both bacterial infection infiltration of cancerous cells was considered to be via the foramen lacerum.
