Findings of Florid Cemento-Osseous Dysplasia: a Report of Three Cases

ABSTRACT Background Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a benign jaw lesion originating from periodontal ligament tissues usually asymptomatic and diagnosed accidentally at routine dental radiographic examination. The purpose of this paper is to report three cases diagnosed as FCOD with their clinical, radiographic and histological findings. Methods Radiologic and clinical symptoms of three cases diagnosed as FCOD are presented. Serum alkaline phosphatase test and biopsy taken from two of the patients are discussed to eliminate the Pagets disease. Results Three patients diagnosed as FCOD and called for routine follow-up. Because of no sign of infection or osteomyelitis, conservative treatment was applied. Conclusions Radiographic examination is significant for the diagnosis of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia, especially in the asymptomatic cases. The roles of the dentist are to ensure the follow-up of the diagnosed patients and to take the necessary measures for preventing from the infections.

Scleroderma : a case report

Scleroderma is an autoimmune connective tissue disorder which is characterized by fibrosis of visceral organs, skin and blood vessels. This condition can be localized or systemic. Its estimated prevalence is 250 cases in a million and it is more common in women than in men. Resorption of the mandibular angle and coronoid process can be observed in patients with scleroderma. Pressure of fibrous mucocutaneous tissues is thought to be the cause of the resorption. Decreased number of wrinkles due to sclerosis and distinct facial features because of the atrophy of ala nasi are among common clinical characteristics of this condition. The aim of this case report is to present a 40-year-old female patient with scleroderma who presented with signs of resorption at the angle of mandible, coronoid process, as well as widening of the periodontal space.

TALON TÜBERKÜLLÜ MEZİODENS VE GÖMÜK SANTRAL KESİCİ DİŞ OLGUSUNDA MULTİDİSİPLİNER YAKLAŞIM MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH IN A CASE WITH TALON CUSPED MESIODENS AND AN IMPACTED CENTRAL INCISOR

OZET Artik dislerin neden oldugu gomuk disler ve bunlara bagli malokluzyonun klasik tedavisi artik dislerin cekimi ve daimi dislerin rehabilitasyonudur. Artik dislerde fazla tuberkul gorulmesi cok nadir bir olaydir. Bu tuberkulun vestibulde gorulmesi ise daha seyrektir. Ancak bu olguda meziodensin surmus olmasi, bu nedenle gomuk kalan daimi dise benzeyen bir morfolojisinin bulunmasi; basarisiz bir ortodontik tedavi ihtimali nedeni ile cerrahi ve protetik yaklasimi gerektirmistir. Sol ust orta kesici disi gomuk olan bu vakada, disin surmesi gereken yerde oldukca genis capli ve vestibulunde belirgin bir talon tuberkulu bulunan meziodens saptanmistir. Gomuk disin cerrahi olarak cekiminin ardindan, meziodens disin talon tuberkulu mine seviyesinde asindirilarak, kompozit laminate restorasyonu uygulanmistir. Tedavi planlamasi her hastanin klinik bulgularina gore degisik sekillerde yapilabilir. Buradaki en onemli kriter, hastanin protetik rehabilitasyonunun hastaya en az zarar verecek sekilde planlanmasi ve olgumuzda oldugu gibi uygun sekilde ve konumda bulunan artik dislerden de faydalanilabilmesidir. ABSTRACT Classical approach in malocclusion due to supernumerary teeth consists of the extraction of supernumeraries and the rehabilitation of the permanent teeth. Extra tubercules of the supernumerary teeth is a rare condition, and it is more uncommon to see this tubercule on the vestibular surface. Surgical and prosthetic approach is planned in this case, because the mesiodens has erupted, and it resembled the impacted permanent incisor; so because of the possibility of an unsuccessful orthodontic treatment, surgical and prosthetic treatment is compulsively planned. Left upper central incisor is impacted and a large mesiodens with a prominent talon cusp on the vestibular surface has erupted at the place of the incisor. After the surgical extraction of the impacted incisor, a composite laminate restoration was applied on the mesiodens talon with minimum removal at the enamel level of the talon cusp. Treatment planning can be made due to the clinical findings of the patients. The most important criteria is to handle the treatment planning of the prosthetic rehabilitation of the patient with the minimum harm and - as in our case - appropriately using the supernumerary teeth.
