Review of bandwidth estimation tools and application to bandwidth adaptive video streaming

Taner Arsan

Streaming video is very popular in todays best effort delivery networks. Streaming video applications should not only have a good end-to-end transport performance but also have a Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in network infrastructure. Bandwidth estimation schemes have been used to improve the QoS of multimedia services and video streaming applications. To ensure the video streaming service quality, some other components such as adaptive rate allocation and control should be taken into consideration. This paper gives a review of bandwidth estimation tools for wired and wireless networks and then introduces a new bandwidth adaptive architecture for video streaming.

Cuneyt Senbalci; Serkan Altuntaş; Zeki Bozkus; Taner Arsan

This paper introduces a system that offer a special big data analysis platform with Domain Specific Language for telecom industries. This platform has three main parts that suggests a new kind of domain specific system for processing and visualization of large data files for telecom organizations. These parts are Domain Specific Language (DSL), Parallel Processing/Analyzing Platform for Big Data and an Integrated Result Viewer. In addition to these main parts, Distributed File Descriptor (DFD) is designed for passing information between these modules and organizing communication. To find out benefits of this domain specific solution, standard framework of big data concept is examined carefully. Big data concept has special infrastructure and tools to perform for data storing, processing, analyzing operations. This infrastructure can be grouped as four different parts, these are infrastructure, programming models, high performance schema free databases, and processing-analyzing. Although there are lots of advantages of Big Data concept, it is still very difficult to manage these systems for many enterprises. Therefore, this study suggest a new higher level language, called as DSL which helps enterprises to process big data without writing any complex low level traditional parallel processing codes, a new kind of result viewer and this paper also presents a Big Data solution system that is called Petaminer.

Received signal strength based least squares lateration algorithm for indoor localization

Tamer Dag; Taner Arsan

Abstract Following the success of accurate location estimation for outdoor environments, locating targets in indoor environments has become an important research area. Accurate location estimation of targets for indoor environments has the potential for the development of many different applications such as public safety, social networking, information and mapping services. However, the GPS (Global Positioning System) technology used for outdoor environments is not applicable to indoor environments, making accurate location estimation a challenging issue for indoor environments. In this paper, we propose a received signal strength based least squares lateration algorithm which uses the existing infrastructure. By employing redundancy in the number of access points and applying least squares approximations to the received signal strength values, the lateration algorithm increases the accuracy of location estimations. The usage of the existing infrastructure makes the proposed algorithm low cost when compared to other positioning algorithms which need very precise high cost components.

FLEX: A Modular Software Architecture for Flight License Exam

Taner Arsan; Hamit Emre Saka; Ceyhun Sahin

This paper is about the design and implementation of an examination system based on World Wide Web. It is called FLEX-Flight License Exam Software. We designed and implemented flexible and modular software architecture. The implemented system has basic specifications such as appending questions in system, building exams with these appended questions and making students to take these exams. There are three different types of users with different authorizations. These are system administrator, operators and students. System administrator operates and maintains the system, and also audits the system integrity. The system administrator can not be able to change the result of exams and can not take an exam. Operator module includes instructors. Operators have some privileges such as preparing exams, entering questions, changing the existing questions and etc. Students can log on the system and can be accessed to exams by a certain URL. The other characteristic of our system is that operators and system administrator are not able to delete questions due to the security problems. Exam questions can be inserted on their topics and lectures in the database. Thus; operators and system administrator can easily choose questions. When all these are taken into consideration, FLEX software provides opportunities to many students to take exams at the same time in safe, reliable and user friendly conditions. It is also reliable examination system for the authorized aviation administration companies. Web development platform – LAMP; Linux, Apache web server, MySQL, Object-oriented scripting Language – PHP are used for developing the system and page structures are developed by Content Management System – CMS.

Transmitter source location estimation using crowd data

Arif Selcuk Ogrenci; Taner Arsan

Abstract The problem of transmitter source localization in a dense urban area has been investigated where a supervised learning approach utilizing neural networks has been adopted. The cellular phone network cells and signals have been used as the test bed where data are collected by means of a smart phone. Location and signal strength data are obtained by random navigation and this information is used to develop a learning system for cells with known base station location. The model is applied to data collected in other cells to predict their base station locations. Results are consistent and indicating a potential for effective use of this methodology. The performance increases by increasing the training set size. Several shortcomings and future research topics are discussed.

Inventory Management is one of the basic problems in almost every company. Before computer age and integration, paper tables and paperwork solutions were being used as inventory management tools. These we very far from being a solution, took so much time, even needed employees just for this section of organization. There was no an efficient solution available in the many companies during these days. Every process was based on paperwork, human fault rate was high, the process and the tracing the inventory losses were not possible, and there was no efficient logging systems. After the computer age, every process is started to be integrated into electronic environment. And now we have qualified technology to implement new solutions to these problems. Software based systems bring the advantages of having the most efficient control with less effort and employees. These developments provide new solutions for also inventory management systems in this context. In this paper, a new solution for Inventory Management System (IMS) is designed and implemented. Most importantly, this system is designed for Kadir Has University and used as Inventory Management System.
