The sporotrichosis is one subcutaneous mycosis, produced by the dimorphic fungi Sporothrix schenckii. The present study describes the occurrence of feline sporotrichosis in Pelotas city, RS, Brazil. The disease was transmitted to an attendAnt of the veterinary clinic. The transmission was caused by scratching of the infected animal. The feline showed deformity of the nasal plane and cutaneous lesions, and the attendAnt presented one single ulcerated lesion on the dorsal left metacarpus. The mycological diagnostic was made by eschaps and/or exsudate from the feline and the attendAnt. The samples were cultivated on agar Sabouraud dextrose with chloramphenicol at 25 and 37°C during ten days. As S. schenckii was isolated from the samples, the diagnostic of disseminated cutaneous sporotrichosis by the feline and cutaneous localized sporotrichosis by the clinician, was confirmed. This note has the aim to alert small animals clinicians for the existence of sporotrichosis, and the high transmission risk by bites and/or scratch of infected animals.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vivo activity of itraconazole and terbinafine for treating experimental cutaneous sporotrichosis. Eighty Wistar rats were used, divided into four groups (TERB20, TERB30, ITRA and CONT). They were inoculated in the left plantar pad with 0.2 ml of solution containing 2x10(3) cell/ml of Sporothrix schenckii and treated with terbinafine (20 and 30 mg/kg), itraconazole (10 mg/kg) or placebo for 13 weeks. The lesions at the inoculation site were evaluated and measured weekly, along with their dissemination. Mycological and histopathological analyses were performed subsequently. The results showed that the animals in the ITRA group differed statistically in all parameters evaluated, in relation to CONT. For terbinafine, there were no statistical differences between the treated and control groups. It could be confirmed that itraconazole presented good activity for treating sporotrichosis, while terbinafine was ineffective for this disease at the doses used. However, more studies on the latter antifungal agent are needed.

Esporotricose experimental sistêmica em ratos Wistar: avaliação hematológica e perfil hepático

Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (AP) hepatic enzymes, hematological values, and total plasmatic proteins (TPP) of 12 Wistar rats with systemic experimental sporotrichosis were evaluated. Inoculation was performed at 2x103 cells of S. schenckii/ml. The values ranged from 35 to 48UI/l for ALT and 67 to 251.3UI/l for AP. Fifty percent of the AP values were above the physiological limits. TPP was elevated in 66.7% (8/12) of the rats with values varying from 7.9 to 8.5g%. In 75% (9/12) of the animals, it was observed that hemoglobin and red blood cells count were below the physiologic limits, and 8.3% (1/12) of the animals showed anemia masked by dehydration. At the necropsy, it was observed local and/or disseminated nodular lesions. At the histological analysis, cells compatible to S. schenckii were found. The observed alterations are aggravating factors for the recurrence and treatment of the mycosis.
