Presents a robot control system dedicated to grinding large Francis turbines. The control system is based on an active force feedback system using a three‐axes force sensor attached to the robot’s end effector. This system offers high flexibility and robustness against workpiece positioning and grinding tool wear. It provides control of the grinding process parameters ensuring high productivity in addition to good grinding performance and grinding tool economy. The system was experimentally tested out on a MultiCraft 560 grinding robot.

Manufacturing automation can enable the foundry SMEs (Small-to-Medium manufacturing Enterprises) to be economically and environmentally sustainable. Foundry industry has significant challenges in the current regulatory and political environment with developing an economical and environmentally sustainable business model. Today, because of metal recycling, most foundries consider themselves as green. In reality, the foundry industry has yet to achieve the higher level of sustainability that the future will demand. Flexible manufacturing has already proven itself as a model for economic sustainability. While this strategy has been examined for general manufacturing, it has not been investigated in detail for the foundry industry. This paper proposes an approach on how flexible manufacturing automation can support the initiative for greener foundries.

Abstract This paper presents an automated assembly and tack welding operation of high performance aerospace components using two real-time controlled industrial robots and a high-precision non-contact measurement system. The system was able to align two components with an offset distance less than 0.1 mm, well within manufacturing tolerances.

Robotic welding of thin-walled aluminium structures is very sensitive to deviations in parts’ positions. Position deviations give inferior weld quality. Measurement devices integrated in the clamping elements of the welding fixture can provide data to the welding robot for dynamic correction of the welding path. The paper describes a system of integrated measurement in clamping systems. Various approaches to measurement of critical dimension deviations are evaluated and optimal solutions have been selected. The obtainable accuracy is analyzed and verified through laboratory tests. A microcontroller-based control system has been developed to process and transmit the measurement data to the robot controller.

Abstract Appropriate description and implementation of internal part traceability in manufacturing is a complex task. Accurate and real- time traceability from a part, or a part feature, to a manufacture, storage, or transport issue is essential to efficient and high- quality operations. With the increasing amount of machine status and product quality information coming from the manufacturing lines, certain questions arise. When there is a problem with the process or product quality what information can be utilized to enable effective traceability to the foundry batch lot? Also, what aggregate information values are needed to enable real-time problem solutions? In this paper a systems-based approach is used to propose a method to define and implement internal part traceability in two participating foundries.

This paper presents an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) system under development and its industrial background as a support system for an automated paint department. The focus is on demonstrating how the holonic architecture can be used to implement a flexible AGV system. The system is composed of autonomous AGV holons who cooperate, directly or as groups, with other holons such as robot holons, vision-system holons and order holons to produce the real parts. The holonic architecture is described in detail and example use-cases presented.
