Challenges in Sustaining Municipal Broadband Networks in the Developing World

Amos Nungu; Terrence Brown; Björn Pehrson

Municipal or community networks seem to be a constructive first step in the process of establishing sustainable broadband networks in areas where the demand for broadband communication services is larger than the supply. Besides meeting the acute demand, one purpose is to stimulate the market by demonstrating connectivity feasibility, to reduce the risks involved for commercial actors. One of the keys to the sustainability and scalability of such networks is a well designed and managed institutional framework based on the local prerequisites.

Industrial effects on resource acquisition : Immigrant enterprises in kista, stockholm

Tobias Dalhammar; Terrence Brown

This paper is based on seven in-depth case studies of small businesses in Kista, Stockholm’s most northern district. This district provides an interesting example with its high technology setting, mixed with considerable numbers of immigrants living in the area. All the firms are led by people who have immigrant background, and therefore they all have ethnic minority backgrounds, either in terms of country of origin or as belonging to a definable ethnic group. The guiding question is if one can find differences between high tech and service-based immigrant businesses in terms of how they use ethnic resources in their resource acquisition efforts. In the case studies we explore (i) how ethnic resources contribute to the acquisition of crucial resources for these firms, and (ii) the utilization of ethnic resources indicates the influence and importance of ethnic minority background for immigrant businesses in different industries. The results show differences in what sources these firms use for acquiring resources. The service-based firms utilise ethnic resources to a greater extent than the high tech firms. These differences influence the importance of the business owners’ ethnic minority backgrounds.

Amos Nungu; Terrence Brown; Björn Pehrson

A viable business model is key for the financial and operational sustainability of community broadband network. Using the public-private-partnership approach, stakeholder analysis and the business model canvas tool, we demonstrate a business model that can guarantee financial and operational sustainability of community networks in rural developing regions. The business model has been validated in a local broadband communication network built in rural Tanzania.

The Sarimner effect and three types of ever-abundant business opportunities

Kent Thorén; Terrence Brown

This article illustrates how corporate entrepreneurship links the firms long term development process with the external environment. Based on the relaxation of several of the unrealistic assumptions in classic economic theory, it also illustrates how corporate entrepreneurship can be an important driver of change in the firms environment. More specifically, the article demonstrates that: 1) one important consequence of entrepreneurship is the creation of more business opportunities, leading to an ever-abundant availability of new business potential; 2) these opportunities can be classified into three categories based on how they come into existence, and by whom they are exploited; 3) this leads to implications regarding strategic approaches to venture selection and pursuit. Each opportunity type is illustrated with examples from the online computer gaming industry. A number of preliminary managerial implications are presented, based on differences in the creation and nature of opportunities in each category.

Open Data Innovation, What are the Main Issues/Challenges for Open Data Projects in Sweden: An Abstract

Serdar Temiz; Terrence Brown

The Internet has greatly reduced the cost of collecting, distributing, and accessing information, services, and resources. In parallel to this advancement, open data in both the private and public sector has gained attention in recent years, although the concept of open data is not new. Advocates have been arguing for years that data gathered or created by a government institution and funded by public money should be ‘open’ or free of any restrictions.

Challenges in Data-Driven Innovation Toward European Digital Single Market: An Abstract

Serdar Temiz; Terrence Brown

In May 2015, the European Commission adopted a Digital Single Market Strategy (2015), which identifies Europe as a potential leader in the global digital economy. If EU fragmentation and barriers are removed, Digital Single Market (DSM) could contribute an additional €415 billion to European GDP. Further, the Digital Single Market could create opportunities for new start-ups, and business can develop and create value for the 500 million consumers.
