Heat transfer in the separated and reattached flow over blunt flat plates —Effects of nose shape

Terukazu Ota; Nobuhiko Kon

Abstract Heat-transfer measurements have been conducted in the separated, reattached and redeveloped regions of two-dimensional air flow over flat plates with blunt leading edges of various shapes. Especially investigated are the nose shape effects upon the heat-transfer characteristics in these flow regions. Temperature, velocity, and turbulence profiles are also measured in the above-mentioned flow regions. It is found that the behaviors of the separated shear layer play very important parts upon the heat transfer in the separated and reattached regions, and that the correlation between the reattachment Nusselt number and the Reynolds number is developed independently of the nose shape when the reattachment length is employed as the reference length in both of them.

Heat transfer and flow around a circular cylinder with tripping-wires

Shuichi Aiba; Terukazu Ota; Hisasumi Tsuchida

An experimental study was conducted on the heat transfer under the condition of constant heat flux and the flow around a circular cylinder with tripping-wires, which were affixed at ± 65° from the forward stagnation point on the cylinder surface. The testing fluid was air and the Reynolds number Red, based on the cylinder diameter, ranged from 1.2 × 104 to 5.2×104. Especially investigated are the interactions between the heat transfer and the flow in the critical flow state, in relation to the static pressure distribution along the cylinder surface and the mean and turbulent fluctuating velocities in the wake. It is found that the heat transfer from the cylinder to the cross flow is in very close connection with the width of near wake.

Measurements of spatial correlations and autocorrelations in separated and reattached flow over a blunt flat plate

Terukazu Ota; Hitoshi Motegi

Abstract Spatial correlations and autocorrelations of turbulent fluctuating velocities have been measured in separated, reattached and redeveloped flow over a flat plate of finite thickness and with a blunt leading edge. Integral time and length scales are estimated. Furthermore, measurements of probability-density distributions have been conducted. It is found from the results that turbulent eddies originating in the separated and reattached regions are extremely large compared to those existing in a turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate at zero pressure gradient, and also that the effects of separation and reattachment upon the turbulence characteristics continue far downstream.

Fouling effects of geothermal water scale upon heat transfer around an elliptic cylinder

Terukazu Ota; H. Nishiyama

An experimental investigation has been conducted to clarify fouling effects of geothermal water scale deposited onto a surface upon its forced convection heat transfer characteristics. Examined is an elliptic cylinder of an axis ratio 1∶3, on which particles of silica scale are uniformly distributed. Local and mean heat transfer characteristics were measured for angles of attack 0° and 90°. Subsequently the fouling resistance is estimated from those results. Mean and turbulent fluctuating velocities were also measured in order to correlate the heat transfer features with the velocity field in the near wake of the elliptic cylinder.

Snow melting with radiative heating

Masahiro Sugawara; Nobuhiro Seki; Shoichiro Fukusako; Terukazu Ota

This paper is concerned with the melting of a packed snow heated by the radiative energy which is the blackbody radiation having source temperature of 3200 °K and short radiative energy. A transfer of the radiation in snow is significantly affected by both the porosity of snow and water saturation. The internal melting in snow is greatly characteristic for radiative heating which is to be produced by absorbing of a comparatively short wave radiation. In this study, an analysis is attempted to predict the variation of snow density, the moving rate of dry-wet interface of snow due to percolation of melt water, and the transient temperature distribution in dry snow zone located under wet snow zone.

A note on an improvement of heat transfer of tube banks

Shuichi Aiba; Terukazu Ota; Hisasumi Tsuchida

An experimental investigation has been conducted for exploring a possibility to improve the heat transfer of tube banks of in-line arrangement, in which the first cylinder was roughened with pyramids. Measured were the heat transfer characteristics of the first cylinder for several cylinder spacings. It is found that there exists the critical Reynolds numberRec, beyond which the heat transfer rate increases drastically by about 30 to 50% as compared with that for the smooth cylinder, though the increasing rate is small for the case of very narrow spacing such asCy/d×Cx/d =1.2×1.2. In the region ofRe>Rec, the separation point shifts downstream to θ=120° to 130° from the forward stagnation point, and it results in the decrease of the form drag.
