Multiple Toughening in Al2O3/SiC Whisker/ZrO2 Composites

Al2O3/SiC whisker/ZrO2 composites were fabricated by hot-pressing to full density. Significant toughening and strengthening were achieved in Al2O3/25 vol.% SiC whisker /15 vol.% ZrO2. The whisker bridging /pullout mechanism rather than crack deflection was believed responsible for whisker toughening in the composites studied. Multiplicative and interactive effects between whiskers and transformation toughening are discussed.

Strengthening of alumina

Relatively large Al2O3 disc particles (16μm, 41μm) with high aspect ratios (5-20) were incorporated into a fine-grain Al2O3 matrix (-1μm) in order to improve the mechanical properties of sintered Al2O3. The flexural strength depends on the disc size and the microstructure of composites. For a composite containing 5 vol% 16μm Al2O3 disc particles, the maximum flexural strength was 604MPa, 28.5% larger than that without disc particles.
