Radio Resource Management for Broadcast Services in OFDMA-Based Networks

Patrick Hosein; Thawatt Gopal

The next generation of wireless networks (LTE, WiMAX and UMB) will have sufficient capacity to support video broadcasts in addition to unicast services such as voice and data. Since broadcast services are resource intensive, radio resources must be carefully managed to ensure proper operation of the unicast services. One approach is to allocate a fixed set of resources (a zone) specifically for broadcast services. Therefore traffic shaping must be used to ensure that sufficient resources are available for all broadcast streams. In this paper we discuss one approach to this traffic shaping issue. We also address the issue of scheduling the broadcast streams over the zone allocated for broadcast services. This scheduler is designed for low terminal power utilization, low channel switching delay and high broadcast channel utilization. Simulations with video traces are used to illustrate the performance of the proposed scheduler.

EVDO Rev. A Control Channel Bandwidth Analysis for Paging

Thawatt Gopal

This paper provides an analytical model to evaluate the paging capacity of the EVDO Rev. A air-interface. In EVDO Rev. A, many enhancements were introduced to support real-time services such as VoIP. With VoIP services, paging functionality is important to page the mobile/access terminals and correspondingly this functionality leads to increased load on the control channel. The main factors, parameters and constraints that impact paging capacity in EVDO Rev. A were shown and determine the sensitivity of paging capacity to these factors.

WiMax MBS Power Management, Channel Receiving and Switching Delay Analysis

Thawatt Gopal

In Wimax MBS (Multicast-Broadcast System), the power savings and channel switching delay are two critical performance metrics that affects the viewing time capacity and quality of experience of the end-user. The amount of air-interface resources allocated for MBS, power savings targeted, channel receiving/switching delay target, multimedia stream data rate are all inter-related. This paper analyzes the interactions of these parameters for Wimax MBS and quantifies the impact of key parameters on the desired power savings ratio and channel switching delay.
