Effects of quantization and overflow in recursive digital filters

Theodoor A. C. M. Claasen; W. Mecklenbrauker; J. Peek

A classification is given of the various possible nonlinear effects that can occur in recursive digital filters due to signal quantization and adder overflow. The effects include limit cycles, overflow oscillations, and quantization noise. A review is given of recent literature on this subject. Alternative methods of avoiding some of these nonlinear phenomena are discussed.

Remarks on the zero-input behavior of second-order digital filters designed with one magnitude truncation quatizer

Theodoor A. C. M. Claasen; W. Mecklenbrauker; J. Peek

A detailed description is given of the areas in the parameter plane where limit-cycles are possible in a second-order digital filter with one magnitude-truncation quantizer. It is shown that in those points for which limit-cycles can exist the possibility of occurrence is small. A method is described for breaking down these remaining limit-cycles.

Extension of a method for sharpening the response of digital filters based on the amplitude change function

Theodoor A. C. M. Claasen; W. Mecklenbrauker

The method for sharpening the frequency response of digital filters, as proposed by Kaiser and Hamming, for symmetric nonrecursive digital filters is extended to recursive digital filters. Basic to this extension is the observation that the phase of a cascade of two identical prototype filters can be realized exactly.
