We investigate an Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) architecture accommodating multiple wavelengths for cost-effective and gradual capacity upgrades. We demonstrate the successful implementation of this multiwavelength PON (MWPON) architecture with dual feeder fiber using a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) at each optical network unit (ONU). The scalability of this MWPON is limited by the power of feeding light, RSOA operating conditions, temperature variations, and Rayleigh backscattering. We report on the possibility of a 16-user network with 20 km of feeder and 2.0 km of distribution fiber. With temperature controlled ONUs, the MWPON may deliver eight distinct wavelengths for upstream access with 10 Gbits/s aggregate capacity.

A tunable transmitter using a self-seeded RSOA, which allows flexible operation of optical virtual private networking (OVPN) in WDM PON is proposed. We successfully demonstrate the use of this transmitter for an initial implementation of OVPN.

A protection scheme capable of providing a higher bandwidth per user in passive optical networks is proposed. The use of forced switching at ONUs for improved bandwidth efficiency and failure recovery of the network are investigated.

We report a fiber-to-the-desk system using carrier-sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) and a remote repeater. The CSMA/CD is performed at the repeater to enable high channel efficiency and low-cost implementation of optical LAN.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a 155 Mb/s digital channel subcarrier-multiplexed with a 1.25 Gb/s burst-mode upstream signal at a PON repeater, and show how this system can be used to transmit digitized video signals to a security system from surveillance cameras installed around multi-dwelling units.
