Strong evidence from studies in humans and animal models shows that if a baby is exposed to too little or too much nutrition during fetal life he/she is more likely to develop conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and osteoporosis in later life. However, it remains to be seen whether altering the mother ’ s nutrient intake during pregnancy can infl uence her offspring ’ s risk of these conditions.
