Effects of persantin on deoxycytidine transport by murine leukemia cells.

David Kessel; Thomas C. Hall

Abstract Effects of persantin on nucleoside transport were studied using a sub line of the L1210 murine leukemia unable to metabolize deoxycytidine. Both uptake and exodus of deoxycytidine were inhibited by persantin; the inhibition was rapid, and could not be overcome by increasing the deoxycytidine concentration, Persantin accumulation was a temperature-insensitive and apparently non-saturable process.

Anti-tumor effect of the amino acid mimosine☆

William D. DeWys; Thomas C. Hall

Abstract Mimosine, an amino acid derived from Leucaena glauca , is known to have cytostatic effects against growing hair follicles and reproductive organs. In the present study mimosine in drinking water was shown to have dose-related, specific antitumor activity in the Walker 256 carcinosarcoma as measured by reduction in tumor size and prolongation in survival. Because mimosine acts as a tyrosine analogue, these results may be of special interest for certain endocrine tumors and melanoma, in which tyrosine has a special metabolic role.

Small lymphocyte phosphorylation of cytarabine--an organ and species survey.

Gary D. Gray; Mary M. Mickelson; Thomas C. Hall; Davd Kessel

Abstract The small lymphocytes isolated from the thymus phosphorylated (activated) cytarabine ( ara -C, cytosine arabinoside) to a greater extent compared with those isolated from the spleen, lymph nodes and blood of mice, rats, rabbits, dogs and rhesus monkeys. These results were consistent with a previously stated hypothesis that adamantoyl cytarabine primarily suppressed thymus-dependent immunologic responses in rats. Although each species had a fairly unique distribution of activity (except mice and rats, which were almost identical), man differed in that not only were the blood lymphocytes far more active than those of the other species, they were equal in activity to the thymocytes.

Response and survival in advanced carcinoma without severe antitumor drug toxicity.

Edwin D. Savlov; Charles D. Sherman; Thomas C. Hall; William A. Nahhas

Summary5-FU is a useful, fairly predictable drug for the palliation of advanced colonic carcinoma. When used with caution, subjective improvement can be expected in more than half the patients and objective remissions in a sixth to a quarter. Toxic side-effects can be kept to a minimum by evaluating the patient carefully before each dose of the drug.
