Air conditioning system with CO2 as refrigerant

The global warming potential of Carbon dioxide (CO2) is 1.300 times over that of the refrigerant R134a. The CO2 air conditioning system is also more efficient than today’s R134a systems, consuming less fuel for the same cooling power, which reduces exhaust gas emissions. These two areas of savings combined mean that the new system has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% a year compared with the global warming impact of today’s systems. Another benefit of the CO2 A/C system described in this short version of the article is that it can be used as a very effective auxiliary heater when operated in reverse cycle mode as a heat pump.
