A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION ON THE EYE.

Donald G. Pitts; William R. Bruce; Thomas J. Tredici

ABSTRACT An argon gas forced transpiration arc (FTA) was used to produce a high intensity 180 nm to 2.5 u continuous spectrum. Rabbit and primate eyes were exposed to ultraviolet from 210 nm to 320 nm, in 10 nm wavebands, to establish photo‐ophthalmia thresholds. Human eyes were exposed at 280 nm to establish a threshold and correlate with the animal research. The UV action spectrum ranged from 210 nm to 320 nm. Both animal thresholds peaked at 270 nm with the rabbit value at 0.054 × 106 ergs/cm2 and the primate at 0.03 × 106 ergs/cm2.

Pupil-Sparing Third Nerve Palsies Caused by Aneurysm

Thomas J. Tredici; Robert P. Green; Patrick S. O'Connor

Third nerve palsy has been recognized as an initial sign of internal carotid artery aneurysm since the late 19th century. 1 This palsy is most commonly produced by a ruptured or unruptured aneurysm at the junction of the internal carotid and posterior communicating artery, usually with pupillary dilatation. Several investigators 2,3 have stressed that a normal pupil with oculomotor palsy, in essence, excludes a posterior communicating aneurysm from consideration.

Monocular Diplopia in Flying Personnel

Kenneth A. Stampfer; Thomas J. Tredici

Fifteen cases of monocular diplopia or polyopia in U.S. Air Force flying personnel appeared due to optical aberrations of physiologic variations within the refracting elements of the eye. In most cases, this symptom was compatible with excellent visual acuity and was not regarded as a detriment to safe and accurate visual performance.
