Astronomie mit dem PC vermittelt dem Leser eine fundierte Einfuhrung in die Welt der himmelsmechanischen Berechnungen, die fur die astronomische Beobachtungspraxis von besonderer Bedeutung sind. Von den theoretischen Grundlagen der Astronomie und Numerik bis zur Erstellung schneller und praziser Anwendungsprogramme vermittelt das Buch die notwendigen Kenntnisse und Softwarelosungen fur die Bestimmung und Vorhersage von: - Positionen der Sonne, des Mondes und der Planeten - Auf- und Untergangszeiten - physischen Ephemeriden der Sonne und der grosen Planeten - Kometen- und Kleinplanetenpositionen (mit Storungen) - Mondphasen - Zentrallinie und lokalen Umstanden von Sonnenfinsternissen - Sternbedeckungen durch den Mond - Bahnelementen aus drei Beobachtungen (auch mehrere Losungen) - Koordinaten aus Himmelsaufnahmen. Die Verwendung der weitverbreiteten objektorientierten Programmiersprache C++ ermoglicht die effiziente Realisierung eigener Anwendungen auf der Basis einer leistungsfahigen Modul-Bibliothek. Die Begleit-CD enthalt neben den vollstandigen, ausgiebig dokumentierten und kommentierten Quelltexten auch die ausfuhrbaren Programme - damit konnen Leser ohne Programmierkenntnisse alle im Buch beschriebenen Programme ebenfalls nutzen. Zusatzlich befinden sich zwei Sternkataloge (Position und Proper Motion Katalog und Zodialkatalog) sowie die Lowell-Datenbank aktueller Kleinplaneten-Bahnelemente auf der CD, die den Nutzwert der entsprechenden Programme weiter erhohen. Die vorliegende 4. Auflage stellt, neben einigen Uberarbeitungen der Texte und Bilder, die ausfuhrbaren Programme fur die Betriebssysteme Windows 98/2000/XP und LINUX sowie die akualisierten Kataloge und Datenbanken zur Verfugung.

The Orbit of the Moon

The motion of the Moon is principally determined by two bodies, the Earth and the Sun. If we consider the gravitational forces that affect the Moon, we find that it is not its nearest neighbour, the Earth, that has the greatest effect, but the more distant Sun. Although gravitational force decreases as the square of the distance, the Sun’s gravity exceeds that of the Earth, because of its far greater mass.

Calculation of Rising and Setting Times

The ecliptic and equatorial coordinates discussed so far are specified in terms of the mean plane of the Earth’s orbit and of the position of the Earth’s axis. Neither of these systems is particularly suitable, however, for an observer situated on the surface of the Earth. As such an observer (without being aware of it) takes part in the Earth’s daily rotation, it appears as if the Sun, Moon, and stars follow large arcs across the sky from East to West during the course of a day, reaching their highest point above the horizon when they are on the meridian.

Physical Ephemerides of the Planets

In the previous chapter we have provided the means of accurately calculating the positions of the major planets. Anyone who frequently observes the planets, the Sun, or the Moon, is also interested in data that describe the aspect of the various bodies. The visual magnitude and the apparent angular diameter are data of fundamental importance. Anyone who wants to observe and plot surface markings or atmospheric structure also needs to know the orientation of the planet’s axis of rotation (and thus of the planetographic coordinate system), relative to the line of sight, together with the conditions of illumination. We intend to show how these data may be calculated. In doing so, we shall try to achieve an accuracy that should suffice, in most instances, for practical observations.
