A distinct difference of opinion has existed concerning the time interval during which diagnostic cervical conization may be safely followed by therapeutic hysterectomy. All such instances over a 10 year period at the Mayo Clinic were evaluated as to the morbidity, significant complications, and duration of hospitalization. The time interval between the two operations and the type of hysterectomy were found to be significant, relative to the morbidity and length of hospital stay. Vaginal hysterectomy, with or without repair, may be performed at any time without increasing these risks. If abdominal hysterectomy is required, these risks are increased when the time interval between operations is greater than 72 hours and less than 4 weeks.
