The Social Networks Inventory: A Diagnostic Instrument Measuring Interpersonal Relationships

Thomas Treadwell; Evan Leach; Stephen Stein

The literature on the social atom construct has a sound theoreticalfoundation emerging from Morenos theory of spontaneity but is psychometrically limited. Most versions of the social atom test are ambiguous, nonstandardized, and difficult to interpret. Although the range of definition is varied, the basic difficulty with many versions of the social atom test is absence of measurement organization, normative data, and congruent test design. A revised retitled version of the social atom test, the Social Networks Inventory (SNI), consistent with Moreno s theory of interpersonal networks, is addressed. Information gained from the SNI is useful in establishing task and emotional roles of group members and in determining group objectives. Directions regarding the tests administration and scoring procedures, along with evidence of reliability and validity are presented. Its use as a research and clinical tool is discussed.

Collaborative Teaching over the Internet

Thomas Treadwell; Evan Leach; Hannah Kellar; Ralph Lewis; Bob Mittan

This article presents a description of a method to integrate Internet technology into classroom instruction. Two classes, one located in a state university in California and the other located in a state university in Pennsylvania, were linked via the Internet into a collaborative learning environment. Gophers, listservs, the World Wide Web (WWW), and usenet groups were used to post course syllabi, collaborative course expectations, and sample student research papers. Course content differed for both groups: one emphasized leadership and motivation theory and the other emphasized research design. Students from each class had to collaborate on a joint research project that tested one of the leadership or motivation theories. The assets and liabilities of this approach as well as observations about developing collaborative learning experiences are discussed.
