In the learning process, teamwork is often a crucial part where students learn to work together using their individual skills despite any personal conflict. Students often enjoy learning in teams and developing teamwork skills, but criticize team assessment as unfair if there is equal reward for unequal contribution. In order to evaluate these teamwork skills, a peer assessment often used to measure the performance each of the team members. Peer assessment can be defined as the responsibility of assessing work of peers against various set of assessment criteria. It is one of the powerful tools for the students to have better understanding on assessment criteria and also transfer certain percentage of ownership of the assessment process and marks to them that subsequently will help increasing their self-motivation and teamwork skills. Group assignment is one type of assessments that is widely used by the lecturers in UiTM (Perak) especially in the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying (FSPU). However, no study has been conducted to measure the level of awareness among the lecturers. Thus, this research seeks to identify the level of awareness of peer assessment among the lecturers in UiTM (Perak). In addition, this research will determine the most preferable medium for peer assessment by the students. To achieve the objectives of this research, data collection through survey analysis method were used. Set of 50 questionnaires was distributed to the lecturers in UiTM (Perak). Data from the questionnaire survey was analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics involving frequency and percentage distribution using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The finding from this research clearly shows that most of the respondent answer completely agree and agree for all of the questions which lead to high awareness about peer review assessment for their students. We also found that most respondents who have high awareness preferred online and paper as their medium of peer assessment. It is hoped that this preliminary study will be used as indicator to shows that the need of development of online peer assessment.

The higher learning institutions in Malaysia are changing rapidly as most of the institutions take account of a number of major external factors such as soft skills. One of the essential soft skills among undergraduates that need to be assessed is teamwork. In the learning process, team work is often a crucial part where students learn to work together using their individual skills despite any personal conflict. This team work can be evaluated through the peer evaluation assessment method. Currently, this peer evaluation had been done by using the manual form that needed to be filled by students in relation to the performance of their group members. The manual peer evaluation method does not reflect the true performance of their peers because when the forms are submitted to the lecturer, everyone can see the marks given by the others. Due to this, the students will tend to give a biased assessment on the performance of their peers because they do not want to hurt the feelings of others by giving a low assessment score. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to discuss the development of an online self-assessment system or otherwise known as the e-PRS. The objective of e-PRS is to provide a non-bias platform for students to evaluate their group members on a fair basis and to ease the process of grading by lecturers. The e-PRS is the acronym for ‘Elektronik’, ‘Penilaian’, ‘Rakan’, ‘Sebaya’ which is an online evaluation system to assess soft skills. Therefore this online evaluation system has the potential to be widely used by all higher learning institutions in Malaysia. It is hoped that the development of e-PRS as an online peer evaluation assessment can enable students to honestly evaluate their peers under complete anonymity because it is an online-based assessment system whereby only the lecturers will see the marks given by the students on the performance of their peers and will contribute to a sustainable learning environment due to its paperless nature.

Recent years, global warming and ozone depletion had impacted people’s lives in many ways. In Malaysia, floods have become a common phenomenon caused by a combination of natural factors such as heavy monsoon rainfall and human factors like poor drainage system and deforestation. Heavy year-round rainfall has led to “spillover” effect bringing heavy rains and subsequent flooding. Floods can cause damage to housing and its possession as well as disruption to communication. At times, relocation is deemed necessary. In reality, flood victims are relocated or evacuated to a safe area provided by the authorities but some run to their own shelter. Therefore, the focus of the government is to accelerate the construction of permanent houses for the affected people. The question arises whether the estimated replacement needs took into account the degree of damage to the affected homes? Do they really deserve to receive the permanent house based on the condition of their house post-flood? Is the condition of the house deemed acceptable by end users? Thus, this preliminary study emphasizes on the understanding of the degree of housing damage after a flood, and the findings provide a conceptual model for the degree of housing damages in the Malaysian context.

Abstract The collaborative learning method makes the students depend on each other in their pursuit of knowledge and makes the learning process more meaningful and interesting. When students are learning in a group, they will not feel alone and isolated from the rest. When students are working in groups, they will be a part of a community whereby everyone will lend support to one another. This will provide the academic and social support in learning that students need. When students of different performance levels co-operate with each other in working towards achieving a desired goal, the students are not merely accountable for their own learning process but are also responsible for their peers’ learning process as well. In other words, success will breed more success. The learning experience can be further enriched when the teaching method which is used takes into account the interests and motivation of the learners. Student motivation will be heightened as a result of collaborative learning. This is because the students will feel in charge and empowered in terms of their own learning process. This paper will discuss the present teaching and learning experiences in the Malaysian ESL classroom, the recommended model of the collaborative learning method that can be applied in the Malaysian ESL classroom, the significance of the collaborative learning method and its limitations.
