A 107-Gb/s field trial was conducted on a traffic carrying long-haul LambdaXtreme® transport platform over an active 504-km Verizon route in Florida thus proving upgradeability to 100 G of the Alcatel-Lucent 50-GHz spaced ULH DWDM system.

A 107-Gbps field trial carrying live HDTV traffic over a 504-km in-service DWDM route, proving commercial systems designed for 10G/40G can be upgraded to 100G without impacting existing active channels.

We describe a novel method of measuring PMD (polarization mode dispersion) of an in-service DWDM system by PMD compensation. We successfully demonstrate the method in a 1500-km ultra-long haul DWDM test bed. We further verify the feasibility of the method for in-service light path PMD monitoring in a field trial in a revenue-generating route in Verizon Network, and obtain an accurate PMD value without impacting live network traffic. The discrepancy between the measured and expected PMD values is less than 6% for all cases tested.

Maintenance friendly network is demonstrated for first time with three SONET protection schemes fed into a ULH system. Traffic can be switched between six field fibers without triggering protection on 1+1, UPSR, or BLSR configurations.

A novel four-tone probe signal is used to measure end-to-end residual chromatic dispersion in single 50-GHz DWDM channels of a long-haul ROADM network while transmitting more than 30 live signals in neighboring channels.

A tunable modulated broadband source and narrow-bandwidth filter are used to measure chromatic dispersion, group-delay ripple, and pass-band shape of DWDM-network light paths. This new method is simple and suitable for in-service measurements.
