Moderating effect of environmental supply chain collaboration: Evidence from Taiwan

Yenming J. Chen; Yen-Chun Jim Wu; Tienhua Wu

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore how corporate environmental strategies, namely, environmental management strategy (EMS) and green product strategy (GPS), affect the competitiveness of a firm. In addition, this study investigates whether the environmental collaboration in supply chains (ECSC), namely, environmental collaboration with suppliers (ECS), and environmental collaboration with customers (ECC) moderate the environment-performance relationship. Design/methodology/approach – Survey methodology and regression modeling are adopted to assess the relationship between corporate environmental strategy and competitive performance of a company, including the moderating effects of ECSC. Findings – Competitiveness is positively affected by EMS and GPS. ECSC moderately affects the links among EMS, GPS, and competitiveness. Regarding the differences between the impacts of ECS and ECC on performance, only ECS acts as a moderator in the enhancement of EMS and GPS. Thus, ECS positively contribute...

The recycling business for sustainability in Taiwan

Yenming J. Chen; Tienhua Wu; Yan‐Ling Chen

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the recycling business in Taiwan as well as its impacts on the collection, environment, economy, and society, providing a good example of setting up an efficient national paradigm.Design/methodology/approach – This paper proposes an alternative policy of dynamic rate of recycling fee as Taiwans current recycling system is not beneficial to spurring design for environment (DfE).Findings – The paper demonstrates that this improvement will indeed result in changes for entrepreneurs and manufacturers toward green design and financial benefits for flourishing the recycling industry.Originality/value – Regardless of the progressive success for the current system in Taiwan, a flat rate recycling fee scheme possesses limited inspiration to promote the concept of DfE. In addition to existing literature, the proposed dynamic recycling fee policy demonstrates the increased level of DfE engagement.

Understanding population dynamics of WEEE recycling system in the developing countries: A SIR model

Tienhua Wu; Yenming J. Chen

The main obstacle to better manage existing WEEE recycling system in the developing countries is reforming the informal sector. However, due to the illegal and unlicensed nature of informal sector, no official data for e-waste disposal flow and for the scale of this sector are released now. Such a situation highlights that this sector is thus far than understood. Moreover, as a result of its negative impacts on the environment and human health in the industrializing countries, the informal sector is definitely a crucial and emerging issue, which is needed to be well understood and better governed. We attempts to apply SIR model to examine socioeconomic, political, cultural conditions as the parameters for observing population dynamics in an e-waste recycling system. Some numerical results are presented to show the dynamics of the population in both informal system and formal system. We also discuss the impacts of instruments and policies on population dynamics of WEEE recycling system.

A decade of entrepreneurship education in the Asia Pacific for future directions in theory and practice

Yen-Chun Jim Wu; Tienhua Wu

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to systematically review the literature on entrepreneurship education (EE) in the Asia Pacific spanning a ten-year publishing period. The results of previous EE research are summarily analyzed and the key themes are critically addressed. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents a systematic literature review of EE articles published from 2007 to 2016 in peer-reviewed, English-speaking journals that are available on the Scopus database. Frequency, bibliometrical data, and research content of the literature review are analyzed. Findings Research in this area is experiencing a steady growth, and a small percentage of scholars or countries in the Asia Pacific are found to make significant contributions to a body of knowledge on EE. The findings also show that the majority of studies lack theoretical legitimacy on the definition of EE and its underpinning theories; however, some articles consider an institutional or contextual perspective on EE, present individual-centered pedagogy in a traditional educational context, or indicate the intertwined connections between EE initiatives and economic growth. Thus, the findings manifest EE research in the Asia Pacific as relatively limited across research agenda, viewpoints, and levels. Research limitations/implications Based on the discussion on key themes, a multi-faceted and multi-tier perspective and a longitudinal study are suggested to provide broader and deeper understanding of the complexities in EE provision and its role in the relationship with national entrepreneurship. Thus, the gap between Western/Asian research contexts and enabling a common evolving body of knowledge can be bridged. Practical implications This study provides valuable insights that can aid educators and policymakers to establish and improve EE design and operations. This study would benefit EE systems in countries of the Asia Pacific region and should improve their practical outcomes. The relevance of integrating functional, personality, and behavioral views into EE development seems difficult but is suitable for EE advancements, thereby boosting the acceptance of entrepreneurship in society and subsequently impacting the economic development of a country. Originality/value This study is the first literature review on EE research in the Asia Pacific; it provides a summary analysis of the current state of EE and future directions in theory and practice.

Supply Chain Risk Management: A Case Study of Military Airplane Components

Tienhua Wu; Yenming J. Chen; Cheng-Chun Lin; Keng-Hao Tsao

Recently in the competitive and uncertain business environment, organizations face increasing different kinds of supply chain risks. Literature shows that managing supply risks is increasingly challenging, because sources of supply chain risks are various and some of them may be even hardly to assess in terms of the probability and severity. However, supply chain risk management is a relatively new and unexplored area of management researches, so limited amount of studies has been conducted. As such, our first research purpose is to review prior studies, providing a conceptual framework for our study and further investigations. Moreover, most researches are typically focused on the business supply chains. As the military organization is mission-oriented, existing evidence may be not suitable for us to extend works into assessing military supply risks. Therefore, a research gap exists in supply chain risk management and military organization. Our second objective aims to discuss supply risk-related issues in military, particularly focusing on the supply chain of military airplane components. Due to the exploratory nature of the research, a case study method would be an appropriate method, providing depth insights into a little known phenomenon. We have two contributions as follows: (1) we review the prior studies and organize the key concepts of supply chain risks and supply chain risk management, providing a research basis for further investigations and (2) we use the case study information to identify the hierarchic formation of risk categories, sources, and their effects in supply chain of military airplane components.
