ONIX for Publications Licenses: Getting an Electronic Grip on License Information

Todd Carpenter

Management of the negotiation for licensed electronic content has been a growing issue since libraries began buying electronic products in large numbers in the 1990s. As subscriptions to digital content have expanded rapidly, the problems of tracking, managing, and communicating the rights and responsibilities agreed to in licenses have grown exponentially. Based on the work of the Digital Library Federations (DLFs) Electronic Resource Management Initiative (ERMI) and EDItEURs work on the ONIX (ONline Information eXchange) structure for communicating publisher data, the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and these partners have worked to develop and improve ONIX for Publications Licenses (ONIX-PL), a system for storing and communicating the terms of a license between systems in XML format. This presentation outlined the history of ERMI, license management issues, and the status of ONIX-PL. It also presents developments over the past year since ONIX-PL was launched officially, describing the potential benefits of the application.

Scott Plutchak; Jessica Sebeok; Concetta Seminara; Susan Skomal; Mark Ware; John W. Warren; Mary Woolley; Grace Xiao; John Zenelis

The At-Large group was the largest and most diverse in terms of stakeholder representation. At-large delegates observed workgroup conversations during the meeting and contributed to these conversations while letting the workgroup teams answer their questions. At-large delegates met during the conference and convened online both before and after the conference in order to develop some high level takeaways based on what they observed. While workgroups focused on answering a particular big question confronting scholarly publishing, at-large delegates had a wide-angle lens on the evolution of these questions and proceedings.

A day in the life of a standards organization director

Todd Carpenter

My day usually starts with my son hopping into my bed and kicking me in some fashion. It’s not quite as unpleasant as an alarm clock, nor is it as reliable, but it certainly is more effective. Together we stroll down the stairs, where after setting him up with breakfast, I check in electronically. Dozens of e-mails, blogs, the local and national papers, Facebook, several Twitter hashtags and the like are how I greet the morning.

Electronic publishing standards

Todd Carpenter

Abstract: One key aspect of our new era of digital publishing is the standards upon which the publication process rests, from creation through distribution to preservation. The network of organizations developing standards in our community is varied and overlapping. So too are the standards. This chapter covers some background on standards and standards development, highlights some key existing standards in electronic publishing, and discusses some issues needing future standardization and some of the initiatives underway to address these issues.
