Speech synthesizer having speech time stretch and compression functions

Akihiro Asada; Kazuhiro Umemura; Tadashi Saito; Tohru Sampei

A speech synthesizer is disclosed with the capability of stretching and compressing the speech time base without changing the pitch of the synthesized speech. One frame of speech is represented during a given time base by LPC parameters which are sampled a constant number of times per frame and stored in memory. Speech is synthesized by fetching each of the stored LPC parameters for each frame and subjecting the parameters to interpolation, synthesizing the interpolated parameters and converting the synthesized parameters to analog format. A decrease in the speed of the reproduced speech is produced by lengthening the time interval of interpolation between the fetching of each of the stored LPC parameters which have been previously stored for each frame. An increase in the speed of the reproduced speech is produced by decreasing the time interval of interpolation between the fetching of each of the stored LPC parameters which have been previously stored in each frame.

A new concept of DATA/DAT system

H. Goto; Akihiro Asada; Hiroshi Chiba; Tohru Sampei; Takaharu Noguchi; M. Arakawa

Presents the DATA/DAT system, which is based on the high-density recording and reproducing technology and digital processing technology of the DAT (digital audio tape recorder) system. This system has various applications, such as replacement of the conventional magnetic tape and data streamer and data storage for image processing. To achieve data reliability, an adaptive decoding algorithm using C1, C2 decoding has been developed. As a result, even at an error rate of 10/sup -2/ after 5000 operations, an uncorrectable error probability of 10/sup -15/ has been attained. To implement the random access and update-in-place function, a group format using gap frames and after-recording technology has been developed. The system can be applied to home electronics and personal databases. >

100 Watt Super Audio Amplifier Using New Mos Devices

Tohru Sampei; Shin-ichi Ohashi; Shikayuki Ochi

A 100 watt audio amplifier was recently developed using a new Power MOSFET which was developed by our MOS Device Group. The Power MOSFET has several advantages over bipolar transistors. It has good frequency response, no carrier storage delay, thermal stability, no secondary breakdown and high input impedance.

High Quality Parcor Speech Synthesizer

Tohru Sampei; Akihiro Asada; Kazuo Nakata

A high quality speech synthesizer system which consists of 3 LSI chips, a speech synthesizer, a 128k bit ROM and a general purpose microprocessor has been developed. This system is based on the recently developed Partial Autocorrelation (PARCOR) voice compression technique. This system can generate high quality speech from a data rate of less than 2400 bits per second. Several new techniques are applied for this system to improve the quality of generated speech especially of the female voice. This system has many advantageous features such as speech speed control and external pitch excitation.

Recent market studies have shown CD-ROM systems to be gaining gradual acceptance in new applications in various fields.1)2) This acceptance is due to the CD-ROM systems great storage capacity, high data reliability cost effectiveness and ease of handling and delivery of media. One of the most suitable applications is in education / training in which electronic books and CAI materials are included.3)
