Abstract This paper describes a model for estimating the efficiency of the variator used in a half-toroidal continuously variable transmission (CVT). It also explains how the model is used to design the optimum variator geometry for obtaining high efficiency. A CVT can improve fuel economy and power performance, but high efficiency is necessary to achieve these improvements. A CVT was designed with this method for use on passenger cars fitted with a 3.0-l turbocharged engine and tests confirm that it provides high efficiency.

Abstract A half-toroidal continuously variable transmission (CVT) was developed in 1999 for the first time anywhere in the world for application to passenger cars. In the half-toroidal variator unit, both the upper and lower linkages of the trunnions are coupled longitudinally to secure sufficient stiffness and strength for greater reliability. At the same time, this design also improves ratio change performance.
