Hydrotreatment of reconstituted coal from Kawasaki Steel Corporation

Abstract Two types of reconstituted coal (RC) from Miike and Hunter Valley coal were hydrotreated under various conditions. The rates of desulfurization, denitrogenation and RC conversion (based on Hexane Insolubles) increased with an increase in residence time or reaction temperature. The initial rates of desulfurization were larger than those of denitrogenation, however higher removal rates for sulfur were more difficult to achieve than for nitrogen. The effect was larger in Miike-RC than H.V.-RC. However, different hydrogen pressures gave no significant differences in RC conversion. The hydrogenation active type catalyst was more effective than the cracking active type catalyst in the rate of denitrogenation and RC conversion.
