Reconstruction with Free Jejunal Autograft for Cervical Esophageal Stenosis

Since 1986, reconstruction with free jejunal autograft has been conducted on 8 patients for cervical esophageal stenosis caused by malignant tumor. There were 2 cases each of carcinoma of the hypopharynx, of the cervical esophagus and of the residual esophagus and 1 case of recurrent carcinoma of the pharynx and of the thyroid respectively. In all cases, we used the jejunum with the second jejunal artery and vein as the pedicle. Postoperative complications included only one case of minor leakage of pharyngojejunostomy. There was no necrosis of the graft or hemorrhage. The patients were able to begin taking food two weeks after surgery and thereafter continued smooth food-intake, except for one patient with a passage disorder due to early recurrence. These results suggest that this technique is an effective and safe reconstruction method for stenosis of the cervical esophagus due to malignant tumor.
