The Compton profiles of lithium and sodium in both liquid and solid states have been measured using 59.54-keV γ-rays from 1Ci 241 Am. A clear difference of the Compton profile between the liquid and solid states has been found in lithium and sodium, respectively. The experimental Compton profiles corrected for the multiple scattering are compared with various theoretical profiles of these elements in both liquid and solid states.

The Monte Carlo method for correcting the effect of multiple scattering in Compton profile measurements has been extended to take account of the geometry of collimators. This procedure is applied to experimental Compton profiles of aluminum measured with 59.54 keV γ-rays for various sample thickness. It is found that the corrected Compton profiles are independent of the sample thickness within experimental errors. Three theoretical Compton profiles for aluminum are compared with the experimental one.

Directional Compton profiles for vanadium and vanadium-deuteride (VD 0.68 ) single crystals have been measured. From comparison between the present experimental result and a theoretical band structure calculation by Wakoh et al ., it is concluded that a part of electrons from deuterium fills the hole bands of V and the remaining electrons participate to form the bonding states between V and D.

Abstract Both Compton scattering and positron annihilation measurements have been carried out for four kinds of Ni-B alloy glasses. From the comparison between these two methods, it is concluded that positrons in Ni-B alloy glasses are trapped at vacancy-like sites in the amorphous structure.

γ-ray Compton profile measurements of Al metal were made over the temperature range from 25 to 900°C in both the solid and liquid states. The Fermi momentum was determined by the Fourier transform of the Compton profile. It is found that the temperature variation in the Fermi momentum of Al metal corresponds to the change in the electronic density in both the solid and liquid states and that the discontinuous change of the Fermi momentum takes place at the melting point.

Comton profiles of CVD-crystalline and amorphous Si 3 N 4 as well as α- and β-Si 3 N 4 were measured using 59.54 keV γ-rays from 241 Am source and a Ge(Li) detector. The analyses of Compton profiles suggest that the valences of nitrogen and silicon are 3 and 4, respectively, which form the covalent nature of the chemical bond.

Compton profiles of liquid and crystalline aluminum metal have been measured using 59.54 keV γ-rays emitted from 241 Am and Ge(Li) solid state detectors. The difference of the Compton profile between the liquid and crystalline aluminum has been found and can be qualitatively understood in terms of the change in the electronic density upon melting. The experimental profile of crystalline aluminum is in good agreement with the result of the LCAO band calculation, while the profile of liquid aluminum is in poor agreement with the free electron model and the Green function method.
