Dimensioning dual-rate access links of a mobile cellular network

Traffic handling capacity of cellular mobile networks will be increased by implementing a new function of supporting dual-rate mobile terminals as well as conventional full-rate mobile terminals at each of the cells in the network. Dimensioning the mobile access links in the dual-rate operation mode, therefore, is needed for planning networks in the new environments and thus an effective method for call level performance evaluation and optimizing link sizes is required. In this paper, we treat the network design problem and present exact and approximation methods for computing call blocking probabilities of the dual-rate mobile access link. Numerical examples are provided and effectiveness of the methods is numerically evaluated.
