Many effective lens design examples using gradient-index (GRIN) materials have been reported so far. However, the GRIN materials that were used in those designs are either very difficult or impossible to produce. We show an effective design and the design techniques of imaging lens systems that utilize realizable materials. The designed lens systems use flat-surfaced radial GRIN lens (Wood lens) with low dispersion, small Δn and small diameter.

Design, Fabrication and Evaluation of a Photographic Objective That Uses a Radial GRIN Lens

Some technical issues in the design, fabrication and evaluation process of the photographic objective lens are treated. In the design process, a unique design technique called the quasi-equivalent glass method is applied. Also, a convenient method is described for the determination of tolerances of the refractive index profile. Performance evaluation showed that the GRIN material made by sol-gel method is usable for photographic lenses.

The dependence of the design performance on the dispersion property of radial GRIN materials is described. Also, a simple method based on the concept of the quasi-equivalent glass for the effective use of radial GRIN materials is presented, demonstrating a design example.
