This study set to explore the career needs and proposes the concept of the gap between career development programs and career needs, and its subsequent effect on job satisfaction, turnover intention, in an effort to contribute to the field of career management, through the effective integration of career needs and career development programs. Questionnaires were completed by 367 R&D personnel from Hsinchu Science‐based Industrial Park (HSIP) in the north of Taiwan. The results reveal that R&D personnel have very diverse career needs at various stages of their career, and that depending on which stage of their career they have reached. The result show that the larger the gap, the higher the levels of both turnover intentions and job dissatisfaction. Managerial implications of these findings are also discussed.

The main contribution of this paper is empirical in nature. We use data envelopment analysis to evaluate the relative efficiency of 34 commercial banks in Taiwan. Fifteen banks are identified as efficient ones and they are divided into four sub‐groups. Conversely, 19 banks are attributed as inefficient ones and the slack analysis are followed. The inefficient banks can effectively promote resource utilization efficiency by better handling their labour and capital operating efficiency and enlarging bank investment function. In addition, we compare the data envelopment analysis results to the financial ratios and show that a consistent effect cannot be obtained. This is to say that we cannot derive which bank has a higher performance from financial ratio analysis only.

This paper develops a non-parametric approach for rnerrsuring the relative operating efSiciency of 34 comnzerciccl banks in Taiwan. As initial estimates indicate cc lower level of technical efficiency in publicly-owned banks, this paper focuses on finding the main source of inefficiency and goes on to prove that it is due to pure technical efficiency rather than scale factor which exist in the publicly-owned banks. Finally, we confirm the above finding using panel datu and develop a Malmquist total factor productivity index to verib that there is a slight increase in the productivity of 34 banks.

Applies the critical success factor (CSF) approach to identify the appropriate CSFs underlying three types of strategy in the banking industry. The empirical results of this paper show that the various strategies adopted have a significant effect on factors determining success and that the mean importance of CSFs varies among the various strategies. The result of a factor analysis suggests four composite CSFs: bank operation management ability, developing bank trademarks ability, bank marketing ability, and financial market management ability. Further discussions and management implications are also presented.

Abstract This paper employs data envelopment analysis (DEA) to measure the relative resource utilization efficiency of 23 university libraries in Taipei City and County. The most notable feature of this paper is that it uses a single input/output measure to characterize efficiency/performance. We calculate the overall efficiency score, as well as the technical and scale efficiency scores of each university library. The estimated results show that 11 university libraries are relatively efficient. The results also show that nine out of these 11 have a relatively good academic research function. Only two of them are attributed with lower research capabilities. We also rated the top three libraries which enjoy the highest levels of efficiency in the sample. This shows that the resource utilization of these university libraries is functioning well. Finally, we find that the inefficient libraries manage their acquisition expenditures and book circulation poorly.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of the semiconductor industry in Taiwan, which is the main economic life‐line in Taiwan. Operational performance is normally deemed as a key factor in industry. The importance of this issue can be measured through performance indices to observe the operational performance of Taiwans semiconductor industry.Design/methodology/approach – A combination of the data envelopment analysis (DEA) and the balanced scorecard (BSC) was employedFindings – This study finds that the efficiency of every domestic semiconductor manufacturer is generally good, and concerning the four perspectives of the balanced scorecard, the most important for the domestic firm is the financial perspective, second is the internal process perspective, third the learning and innovation perspective, and most unimportantly customer perspective.Research limitations/implications – Owing to the difficulties in data collection and the widespread ranges of the four major aspects, t...

Purpose – The purpose of this work is to elucidate how price, brand cues and customer value are related, and to explore the influence of price and brand cues through service quality and perceived risk on customer value, focusing specifically on Taiwan.Design/methodology/approach – Samples were collected using a questionnaire which assessed the quality of our measurement efforts by investigating reliability and validity. We then compared our hypothesized model with a rival model based on the overall fit, parsimony, and percentage of model parameters that were statistically significant.Findings – Service quality is found to be positively affected by brand cues, whereas perceived risks are negatively influenced by price cues. Exactly how customer value is affected by the service quality and perceived risk is considered. Brand cues notably indirectly affect customer value through service quality, whereas price cues notably indirectly affect customer value through perceived risk.Research limitations/implicatio...

We employed both chance-constrained data envelopment analysis (CCDEA) and stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) to measure the technical efficiency of 39 banks in Taiwan. Estimated results show that there are significant differences in efficiency scores between chance-constrained DEA and stochastic frontier production function. The advanced setting of the chance-constrained mechanism of DEA does not change the instinctive differences between DEA and SFA approaches. We further find that the ownership variable is still a significant variable to explain the technical efficiency in Taiwan, irrespective of whether a DEA, CCDEA or SFA approach is used.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a case study showing how the selection of performance indices affects performance results and the evaluation of a firms performance. Design/methodology/approach - This paper employs a data envelopment analysis (DEA) framework using four kinds of performance indices selection, which include basic input/output items, balance scorecard (BSC) indices, balanced scorecard with risk management, and traditional financial indices, to evaluate banking operations. Findings - Shows that a DEA-based evaluation of performance produces a similar view of the firms well-being as does an analysis of financial indices; however, a BSC-based evaluation produces a different assessment. Research limitations/implications - This study was based on the following assumptions: first, when organizational units achieve technical efficiency, they will improve their organizational performance. Secondly, the inputs and outputs selected for the data envelopment analysis provided an indicator of the changes of banks technical efficiency over the six-year period. Practical implications - This research was based on the data envelopment analysis approach to find different performance efficiency to apply four performance indicator selections, which include basic inputs/outputs items, balanced scorecard indices, balanced scorecard with risk management, and traditional financial indices, to evaluate bank operation. Originality/value - Combines the balanced scorecard concept with data envelopment analysis measurements (model information) to generate measures of technical efficiency for a Taiwanese bank. It shows how comparisons can be made within and across companies on the basis of balanced scorecard measures.

This study attempts to develop career development programs capable of responding to career needs at different career stages. The current implementation status of these career development programs in Taiwanese businesses is then examined, along with the level of satisfaction of R&D personnel with available career development programs. The relationship between the career development programs and job satisfaction, professional development and productivity is then examined, revealing an association between high satisfaction of R&D personnel with career development programs and high job satisfaction, professional development and productivity.
