本研究は, 明治期東京の邸宅庭園を対象として, 明治期の地形図を中心に庭園空間の (1) 成立形態,(2) 立地・構成の2つの側面から分析を行った。その結果, 以下の3点が明らかとなった。(1) 下江戸期の武家地を前身とし, 明治期には江戸期の土地の区画に改変を伴いつつも, その立地形態は江戸期の庭園を継承した可能性が高いこと,(2) 立地形態は, 3類型 (崖線型・台の端型・平地型) に大別され, 眺望 (崖線型・台の端型), 池 (崖線型) など, 東京の地形状況 (地域性) を十分に活用した庭園が多数確認できたこと。(3) 多くの庭園には, 共通して芝生が多数利用されており,「芝庭」が庭園構成の中心的な役割を担っていたこと。
